Rear captive nuts on 96 XJ
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:51:44 PM »

Hi All, My 1996 Cherokee is halfway through getting a 3" lift. Would have been complete if it weren't for one of the captive nuts for the rear shackle coming adrift in it's superbly designed housing....  :lol_hitting: Does anyone have a recommended way to get to it? I know that a bit of welding is going to be needed and I'm not afraid of this, I just don't want to spend a weekend doing just this job though... I have to chase the upper damper mounts through with a tap too...... :banghead: My friend and I have come up with several ideas on how we can solve the issue and there are several size grinders, a mig and plenty of steel ready and waiting. Options we have thought of are to remove the tank and come right through the 'chassis rail' from behind OR grind the housing back after cutting the forward section of the shackle 'box' out - IE grind that housing back so we aren't losing the end of the bolt in the rail.... Any ideas?
