Sorry if this is all old, but there seem to be so many options that it's difficult to see the wood from the trees sometimes.

I'm thinking of getting a TJ, and want something a bit beefier than stock, but not a Tonka. Seems to be that going up to 31" on a 2" lift would give it a bit of a boost, without compromising anything too much. Does that sound right to you who know?

If I get one ready modded, are there good and bad things to watch out for with this sort of lift, or is it only really critical when it comes to bigger changes?

If I buy stock and mod it myself (ie probably pay someone else to do it for me), what's the best way and what's it likely to cost? How much should I allow for a set of wheels and tyres (nothing flashy)?

Either buy a stock one, fit 31's, front disconects and go and play before spending any more money     

OR

wait a bit and buy one with a 2" OME lift, 31 BFG's, 1" body lift, rock sliders, snorkel, K&n, proper recovery bumpers

catergorically buy one that is already done, i know a jeep is built not bought blah blah  but why pick up the bill and aggravation when someone else has already done it for ya, and the ones that have been done NEVER EVER NEVER get the money back that they shelled out in the first place

3yrs in and my CJ still isnt done, for a myriad of reasons that are subject to piss taking and mirth, but if i had my time over i would have just waited to pick one up already lifted as a minimum (and saved myself huge bills and aggravation)

however, if u do decide to go stock and mod yaself, then i can recommend Morris Jeep Services for ya work at non heart attack inducing rates

If you do the work yourself then go for a stock or slightly modified one and put extra mods on yourself. This way you understand how is all works and can find and fix stuff when it breaks - you will also know where all the greasing points and other maintenance stuff is.

If you are going to pay for someone else to do all the work for you then you may as well buy something that has what you are looking for and keep some money aside for any repairs that are needed. Running costs, ongoing repairs, maintenance etc. is higher than just owning a car when you have a Jeep and use it offroad.

P.S. mocaj's advice on basic mods for a TJ seem spot on to me
