Steering help needed
« on: December 23, 2010, 02:37:32 PM »

Went to go out in the jeep today - turned the steering wheel and it just turned - tyres did not move

If I pushed the shaft in the engine bay towrds car it would somtimes catch a little.

wondered if splines on the steering steering wheel had stripped - after struggling to get it off  . it is all fine.

Did notice that while puller was on steering wheel it seemed to grip and turned the tyres  :017:

Not got a spare steering column to look at -

Is it easy fixable or new column??

Could it just be that say clamp on steering box has slipped and needs pushing back up?

Have dug deeper and found out what it was

It looks like the UJ at the bottom of the steering column. inside the car, has been removed before - have a look at the photo you can see the hammer marks on it  :jpshakehead:

Then when it has been put back together the bolt was still not removed and the splines were only located on the outer set - not both of them with the bolt in the recess stopping it from pulling out

So the splines have finally stripped

JEEP OWNERS: Save the energy you use to turn the steering wheel by only driving on straight roads.

But how many turns is there in the clockspring and how many in the steering?? - just so that I know how much margin of error I've got :icon_redface:

If it does come down to it though I've a spare one in the garage :greggmo:

Bloody hell mate that was a close shave!

Might seem a bit of a pisser now but I recon you could say that escape was your best Chrismas Pressie this year!

Why not gently count the availiable turns on your spare clock spring, set the one in the Jeep at the central point and reassemble from there?

Time to start looking for a replacement section of steering column too as yours will only be able to achieve half design strength now, otherwise it's a bit like committing suicide but not knowing if or when the axe is going to fall or exactly on who.

Happy Christmas an all that but please don't do half a job  :steeringwheel:
