93 xj water loss problems
« on: January 09, 2011, 08:27:48 PM »

right my 93 4.0 litre high output xj is using water

I can do a 100 mile trip approx don't matter if its on normal roads or laning and can guarantee every time that the expansion tank will need filling up not talking a few drops but will be completey empty and takes approx 2 litres of water/antifreeze to fill.

I am pretty sure the water system is pressurizing the expansion tank bottle as you can hear it hissing if you pop the bonnet while engine is running once it is warm i thought it was the rad cap as the spring was missing off it but have replaced it with another one and it is still the same

I have had the engine running on idle for over 45mins with both rad cap and expansion tank cap off and it does not use any water and i can't see any leaks anywhere

The only thing is when the lpg system was installed they removed the expansion tank bottle as the vaporiser used was quite large and replaced it with a vw one that has a screw on cap dont know if this is causing a problem

I don't think it's a head gasket problem as it starts pretty much first time every time and the oil and water look fine no water in oil or vice versa

Has anyone got any ideas on this one as it is now frustating me

cheers

hi it can be a number of things. faulty thermo sticking.  if it is the head gasket you dont always get water in the oil or vicea versa. as it could be blowing combustion across the gasket and into the water jacket pressurizing the water system.quick cure if you dont want to take the head of assumming worse scenrio headgasket is wonderweld. i owned agarage and had a p38 come into us changed the headgasket and still pressurized turned out to be a crack in the block causing combustion into the water jacket put this wonderweld in instant cure and the guy 18mths down the line still driving the car.

The stuff i used in my VM diesal cherokee was called steel seal , i needed two bottles of it...

I had the same problem as you , not uncommon in a diesal cherokee , i discovered the problem shortly before leaving the UK on a long drive to Poland...

I put this stuff in the water , let it warm up , then let it cool down , then warm it up again...I was pretty sceptical it was gonna work , but to my suprise , it did...!

Drove it all the way to Poland without any problem , and its been to Ukraine a few times too...

Its almost a year since i put it in , done thousands of miles , its working fine....  much cheaper and easier than changing the heads...

Had another look this morning and i think i may of found the leak

the expansion tank bottle appears to be leaking on the seam i think the cold weather may of caused a hairline crack

will try another one first and see if it cures the problem then go from there

thanks for the info on the wonderweld as this may be the next option

cheers

another product is K-Seal, it creates a seal between on the hot part of the failure and is added in liquid form tho the coolant. remember change the coolant add more k-seal, fluid metal, wonder steel or whatever your using
