WHAT IS THIS?

Please can someone tell me what the unit with diesel pipes on immediately at the right hand side at the back of the engine. It has electrical connections at the bottom also. The wife had to call the AA out today and he said that the rubber seal was at fault at the base of this unit.
 I am assuming its the diesel pump. The AA guy said it was the fuel filter so I bought a new one but it dont look like this unit.  The vehicle is a 2004 Cherokee 2.8 crd. Thanks in advance.

I will try to get 1 tomorrow as dark and very damp when got home from work.
