Intermittent starting 2.5td cherokee
« on: January 16, 2011, 03:38:03 PM »

My Cherokee has got difficult to start sometimes the solenoid clicks but does not spin the starter other times its OK. If it just clicks and I move the wiring harness at the back of the engine it allows it to start but this is not really satisfactory, I suspect  a bad or loose connection on the starter solenoid and would like to check it , is it easier to go at it from the top of the engine or from below I am not contemplating removing the starter motor yet, I just want access to the wiring. I have checked the relays fuses and other wiring connections.

If you off road it's not uncommon for the starter to clog up - remove the offending item clean and replace as required - then report back!!!

H'mm not the way I can go at the moment, gravel drive and no garage ,so I would rather avoid pulling the starter if I can. It isn't used for off roading I have motorbikes for that but it is my main transport the engine starter area is reasonably free from crud (although there is a fair bit of veggy oil spilt over the back of the engine a blanking cap came off on the low pressure fuel return but that's sorted) I am really looking for a short cut to get at the wiring terminals on the starter motor. If after that if I have to pull the starter it will have to wait till the weathers better.

I can understand your caution it's a PITA on the VM to remove the starter sadly I can shed no further on this unless you do as suggested.

to get anywhere near the starter you need to go from under.

good luck getting to the connections

starter motor = engine mount removal.

the veggie oil spill might be the problem if it's leaked into the starter and cooked

Oh well  I guess it will have to wait till I can get under it  at least I will be able to replace the oil pressure switch at the same time.
Thanks Chrysler for your well thought out easy access to engine components etc I love my Cherokee, no I really do and so far most things have been easy fixes.

Thanks guys you confirmed what I thought but I was hoping that maybe?.

Hi I strapped the starter cables to the wiring loom(at the back of the engine block) this has effected a temp repair and would seem to bear out the loose connection now I just need a good dry day and I will see if I can do the job properly
thanks all
