1999 XJ speedo and rev counter playing up
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:01:13 PM »

New one for my XJ today.  Noticed that the rev counter and speedo had stopped working - not sure if its connected but the AIRBAG light was coming on and off and the yellow/orange light with the key in a crossed circle (not even sure what that one means)

The lights stayed on but the needles kept working then stopped then working again.  Drove it again this evening and it was all fine.

Any ideas?

Block connectors behind the binnacle require cleaning.

Probably a bad connection at the cluster contacts which is causing the power or data link connection to the cluster to drop out. There is an "actuator test" you can do to check it isn't a fault within the cluster itself. Press and hold the odometer reset button, turn the key to the on position then release the odometer button. The gauges will sweep and cluster controlled lamps will flash ina  predetermined sequence. Rev counter and speedo should move in a similar fashion.
