Oil sensor replacement.....
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:56:43 AM »

Hello Gentlemen,

Jeep G CH 1993 Wagoneer 4.0 Lt Petrol.

I am in no way a mechanic but I do like trying to fix problems if I can.

I have had a look through both my Manuals and through the internet and there isnt much on Oil Sensors.

Am I right in thinking that the oil sensor is by the oil filter?

and what does it look like?  I have seen something that is the size of my middle finger (no pun) but not sure if thats it.

Is this a job I can do myself?

Thanks for any help and advice you have chaps.

Regards

Which manuals do you have?  I still have the Chilton book from when I had my XJ...I'll try and remember to have a look in it tonight for you.

Ive been having another trawl through the internet and it transpires that the oil sensor was introduced on the 1993 models and quickly removed as it was notorious for causing this problem.

I also found another diagram with what looks like a hexagonal nut actually on the oil pan underneath the starter motor.

Watch this space.

Cheers

Right enough BF, that Chilton/Haynes manual is crap!

Good chance the hex headed job in the sump is the thing. I've been more into Alfa's, and they often have an oil level sensor in them - it's a pretty crude thing. Bolts in to the bottom of the block and extends into the sump as you'd expect, the sensor itself is a small bi-metal contact and a heater coil. The thing gets volts put on it briefly at startup which heats the coil, if the oil is low, this allows the bi-metallic to get hot enough to open the switch, which triggers the warning lamp.

Can you see how many wires are connected to it?  On the Alfa one, there are 2. One for the heater, one for the switch. You might find you can simply ground the switch wire (assuming it's the same thig of course....) to make it shut up.
