1996 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with gearbox (i think) issue
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:53:07 PM »

Bought this car a month ago and I am now noticing a problem, when driving from cold the revs will climb as if not in gear...so when i am driving with "drive" engaged the revs often climb as if not in gear?
as the car warms up this seems to go and it drives normally, has anyone had this problem?
Thanks
Gary

Is it mainly when pulling away on steep hills?

Just wondering, because very occasionally, when I go to pull away in D it seems like the car is in neutral for a couple of second. Only happens when cold. Wondering if it could be poor cable adjustment or low transmission oil or something.

Check the fluid level, only use Mopar atf+4. Also make sure it has the right filter fitted. If it is a '96 but has had a later replacement transmission, the '96 filter will be too shallow to pick the oil up if the level is low.

It has a deeper oil pan with ribs in a criss cross pattern pressed into the bottom. It was fitted to 1998 models and carried over to the '99 on WJ. Factory replacement parts superceded to this design. The late filter is thicker to reach the bottom of the deeper oil pan and has a hard plastic shell rather than the open teabag design.

Ok so done a full (home) service now, drained trans box oil and replaced filter and used MOPAR ATF+4 at £70 +, checked levels hot and cold and now it is worse? seems to be slipping gears or something does it all the time apart form motorway driving?

Help? Please?

when you changed the oil did you manually select all gears on the selector and let it run in them for a min or so

you need to do that on an auto to fill up all the galleries and valve block otherwise you can get slippage
