Rear axle problem with my 1998 Grand Cherokee 4 litre
« on: April 09, 2011, 08:31:44 PM »

I would appreciate very much if some one could advise me on a problem with my ZJ,driving along straight road, more or less, coming to a halt there is a noise coming from the near side rear wheel, same sort of noise I used to get on my old XJ,which had knackered rear axle, and when I pull away the noise is worse. The strange thing is that it does not happen every time, and no noise when turning sharp right or left, like on the XJ. I don't want to take it to the main dealer, who knows. what they will say what it is. Thank's

Hi Mike,
Sound's like clunking, but as I said not all of the time, I can do the same run and It's not there, then maybe next time It's back, most noticeable when I have travelled 10-15 miles, awhen axle has warmed up a bit, but not every time
                                                 Thank's

Really basic, sorry if a bit patronising, does it have enough oil in it?? My buddy's was noisy and when checked it had almost zero oil in. Filled back up and it was sooo much better.

Thank's for your input Jamesh, I'm very up on servicing my Jeep, I bought a cheap XJ for when I was working on windfarms here in Wales, knowing the back axle was noisy, after two years pounding up and down forestry and farm tracks it got very noisy, as I said the sound is the same as the XJ was making , but not all the time, and only stopping or pulling away in a straight line, nothing when making a sharp turn, and not every time. I belive it to be the LSD myself and just want confimation. I have changed the rear axle oil and added two bottles of additive (Jeep technician at my local dealer told me to do it that's what they do in the States apparently)every year since owning the Jeep.
                                                                                                  Cheers.

I'm not really up to spec on lsd axles but I do know if the plates are gone they make a lot of noise on turns

If the pinion has gone as per usual xj axle just unbolt the prop to see if there is any movement

probably will be noisier when travelling as the oil will have warmed up and is thinner

I put really thick axle oil in my old xj till I changed the axle to hide some of the noise

Thank's for the input guy's, I did the same with my old XJ, put thicker oil in the diff.,I will take the propshaft off and check the pinion, when I get a couple of spare hours(boiler went kaput, putting in new one and new rad's with a little help from my bro.)I have always put in the additive, I was addvised to use two bottles. If I do need to get a axle rebuild, any recomendation's?
                              Thank's again for your input.
