Need a mechanic in the North East.
« on: April 18, 2011, 11:25:24 AM »

Hi,

Just bought a 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland edition. 4.7 V8. I'm up in Newcastle and I'm not keen on taking it to the local dealers (Kings). It's 56K with full service history, most of the stamps are every 3000 miles. I've had it in to Kings and most of it seems in good order. Needs a few seals replacing here and there.

I've got a fault with my heating at the moment, I think it's the vacuum hose (from reading on the net) where it only blows out of some of the vents.

Anyone got any recommendations for reasonable mechanics North of Leeds and South of Glasgow? I'm prepared to drive to get it looked after properly by someone who isn't going to rip me off. I don't mind spending decent money on it, I just don't want to be fleeced and I know nothing about cars.

Thanks

Andrew

If you have the full duel zone climate control then it uses electric motors to move the flaps in the heater.
if you have then you can get it to show fault codes this site has everything you need to know about your Jeep

Thanks for the responses; it's nice to feel welcome.

So, it seems there aren't any recommended guys in the North East, Doncaster is do-able but not particularly close. There's a normal garage who are happy to look at it, can anyone point me in the right direction of a list of recommended oils / filters etc? I don't want them using anything they can get their hands on.

I'm really new to all this; I normally buy or lease a brand new car, run it for 2/3 years and have the dealer just take care of everything. I can't do any of the work myself, but, I'd like to know that it's being done properly.

From reading about, EDM have a great reputation. It's a massive hike for me, but, it might give me peace of mind when the annual service is due. I've got an ODB interface cable coming so I can check the fault codes, but, from reading carljh's reply, it seems that it won't be the vacuum as I won't have one! It does seem like the blend door issue however. I'll pass that website on to the mechanic, if he won't read it I suppose he's the wrong man for the job!

Thanks again to the pair of you.

your normal garage should be able to do most of the work and have a look at the sticky post in tech for oils etc

Right thanks everyone; after a few false starts I think I've settled on a local garage.

They seem OK, they gave me a pre-mot check the other day and reported everything as A-OK; I still need the blend-door fix and the heated seats repaired, but, it'll wait on that and go to EDM when I work out the time to get it down there.

I've ordered a 60K service kit of ebay for £80ish which covers AIR/OIL filter, sump and plugs. The garage are happy to do the labour.

I'd like to give the whole thing an overhaul, it seems in fairly good nick and I paid a reasonable price for it, so, could someone give me a hand in creating a work-list? The garage want to save me some money and just do the minimum, but, I'd rather lavish it with the attention it deserves. I don't want to come across like a muppet to the garage, so if I could across like a muppet on here, you can all have a laugh and I'll get the information I need :)

So Far:

Transfer case drain and re-fill (Mopar® P/N 05016796AB )
Powersteering drain and re-fill (Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931))
Front-axel drain and refill (Mopar® P/N 04874469  need to add LSD additive)
Rear-axel drain and refill (Mopar® P/N 04874468  need to add LSD additive)

The ATF should only need doing at 100K, but, the car has done 60K in 10 years, seemingly all very short journeys, so it's indicated that it's worth changing earlier)
Automatic transmission Fluid (Mopar® ATF +4, type 9602 - 2 filters required [Cooler return filter: P/N 4799662AB and 4WD - Primary filter: P/N 5013470AC ]

Brake fluid drain and re-fill

I believe the PCV valve has recently been replaced, but, I need to check back through the stack of receipts I have for it

Cabin air filter (Mopar® P/N 5013595AA)

I'm going to get them to check the brake pad health, but, they squeak a bit, could this be the discs needing to be skimmed.

My only other concerns is the steering is sometimes quite heavy and non-responsive, and, there's quite a bit of rubbing or chafing on full lock. What can I ask them to check on this? Is there something that's likely to need a bit of overhaul at 60K? I'm talking about parts which are probably mechanically functioning, but, worn to the point it makes sense to get them looked at.

Thanks again and please try not to laugh too hard at my utter ignorance, just want the old girl to keep on trucking.

Andrew

PS In case it's not clear, I know nothing about cars, never had anything with more than 40K on, always bought new and changed before warranty was up. Left the car with the dealer, had them service it, didn't really care about it.

Hi andrew, Im just down the road from you (well about 35miles) if you fancy taking the beast up on the N york moors give me a shout. Mines stock and manages some interesting routes  :icon_biggrin:

As far as dealers go dont dismiss Kings for parts. Their labour charges are ridiculous but their parts prices can be good and the advice (certainly in the teesside branch) is v good. For some parts theyre cheaper than aftermarket which surprised me greatly for others way ott. They can do you next day vehicle off road or if you ask for best price theyll generally knock 5% off and delivery rarely takes more than a coule of days.

I had an obscure fault on my heater/engine running temp and at first I was going for for the air blend doors but in the end it turned out to be a good old fashioned thermostat problem, it was just opening too early for some reason so it was heating up but not enough. I know yours is a petrol and the blend doors are a common prob but dont jump to any conclusions  :greggmo: (like I very nearly did  :tool:)

about your heater, you dont need an odb reader, the codes are displayed instead of the temperature numbers on the display.
