.......of course if you want the sensible answer..... For a 42RE, 4 is the number of ratios 2 is the torque rating R designates rear wheel drive E designates electronic control. 44RE is a heavier duty version, hence the torque rating of 4. In the UK it was only found in the WG 3.1 TD, but they used to fit it to the V8 engined ZG/ZJ as well.

ok now i have just confused myself further  :017:, i own a 2002 WJ 4.0  so my box would be a RFE to denote 4 wheel drive,  where would i find the box serial number to id it properly ie 42 44 45 etc. this might seem a bit thick of me but i have owned jeeps for 11 years now and apart from a water pump and a light switch  on the XJ i have never had to lay into it one with spanners.

All 4.0s had the 42RE. As I explained, the code does not designate 4 wheel drive or not as you can have a transfer box on the back or not depending on the rear housing and output shaft fitted to the overdrive unit. That would be down to individual part numbers. The 45 (545) RFE is the WG V8 gearbox 4 speed (with dual 2nd gear ratio giving 5 speeds) Torque rating 5 Rear wheel drive Fully Electronic. Oil wise, 42REs prior to 1998 had a shallower oil pan to later versions, so held 3.8 litres against 5 on the later one.
