Grand Cherokee Diff Lockup at High Speed
« on: April 15, 2011, 03:40:26 AM »

Hi Everyone,
I've got a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the 3 liter diesel, now at about 148,000km. Recently it has started with this behaviour: After about 20 minutes of highway travel (110 to 120km/hr) the dash indicator comes on with SERVICE 4WD SYSTEM. And the differentials lock up. Not a big deal until I slow down and try to manouver in a parking lot (and the tire wear and the fuel consumption). There is nothing I can do to get it out of that state. After turning off the ignition for about an hour or more, when starting up, usually the diff lock actuators return (you can feel that) and all is back to normal (for a while).
The problem got to be pretty repetitive so I started taking down time and mileage, but then it quit doing it for a day and became more erratic. Two Jeep dealer service staff I have talked to were of no help "never seen that before".
Does anybody have any ideas (before I take drastic measures and disconnect the actuator wiring)?
Thanks,
Hugo

Sounds like you need to get the shifter module scanned for faults at the dealership.

Hello. I'm not technical at all but sometimes my 2006 flashes up this warning. Sometimes all the boxes around P R N D are on and it feels like it's in a low gear. I found that pulling the gear lever towards you as though you were knocking it up a gear stops it. Mine only does it after hours on the motorway.
