Engine identification
« on: June 05, 2011, 12:54:24 PM »

Looking through all the engine info I could find it seems the only way to know what engine I have is by the engine tag riveted to the RHS rocker cover however, mine is missing:( All I know so far is its a AMC 360 out of a Wagoneer, anyone got any bright ideas on how to work out year and type etc etc

I would like to know the year of manafucture so getting parts that need this identification is made easy, I would also like to know why there was such a massive Hp drop between the early (70 - 71) 360's and that of the late ones, and what can be done to bring this figure back up to the more respectable V8 figures. And the other one is why the Hp rating of say the 360is so much less than say the equlivent Chev/Ford V8 of same dimensions.

california emmissions controls caused a lot power drops as they came into force.

Yeah I gather that but what exactly did they alter? Was it internal changes or added on bits that could be removed to improve the performance

carbs were downsized to flow less air and cam profiles were changed, and intakes manifold were changed along with the introducton of air pumps to push air into the exhaust manifold to burnt unburnt fuel , I don't believe there were any changes to the block itself just everything that bolted to it so that the engine was efectively starved of fuel and air and hence big loss in power.

Ok so if I read right then to get back to 70's hp ratings I would need to change the camshaft, change the inlet manifold, change the carb and get rid of the egr valve and its bits?

yup basically all the emisions stuff doesn't need to be there to meet uk requirements, you could do with changing the exhaust manifold as well  but you can get away with it for a start and change it later.

In all honesty I would pm bubba as he has already done this on one of the v8's he has he can tell you what manifolds he recommends for a jeep.

Ok Bubba, for me and all those that care what are the necessary parts that I need to get for the 360 to bring back the lost Hp from all the emission control reductions made after 1971,  :017:

dont forget something that greatly confuses folk is

pre 71 all the yank manufacturers quoted all there engines in gross bhp then post 72 they all started talking about nett horsepower ratings wiping 35 to 40% of the advertised hp in to the bin .............where did it go ? ?..............nowhere the nett system acounted for the engine and the drivetrain  with  engine fully dressed with all ancilerys

up to 71 they threw the engine on a dino with just the water pump belt and generaly dyno headers [long tube headders] so power was always peak

but if you are not happy with the power of your 360  and in a cj its plenty i think but if really want more

intake manifold non egr
4 barrel carb [vacume secondaries]
hedders
hei dizzy or dui

all give good results and relativly cheap

hei is the best place to start as it gives good results on the standard set up
cam only gives good results with the inlet and axhaust manifolds to compliment each other

Not after heaps of power, just good reliable power, as BD said I have got the HEI dizzy, have got a set of headers, taken off the EGR system, etcetc, as you say the V8 power is probably plenty for a light CJ
