Uprating sills on my ZJ to rock crusher grade
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:25:20 PM »

I have been wanting to install some rock sliders on my ZJ for some time now.
But having a long arm lift some of the extra body bracing gets in the way of using any off the shelf types

So I thought of doing what the guy in the link as done

http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum/showthread.php?12046-Rocker-cutting-outage&highlight=rock+slider+weld

and also give the long arm kit something better to bolt to

Current view of the under side of ZJ see blow

Welcome  any advice you lot can give on any improvements or good reasons not to do it

thanks

Yup reckon that's the way to go........ I would have welded the cut top edge to seal things from getting packed with mud.
Maybe cut that top edge longer and joddle a bend in it to ease welding to the rectangle section. Would have to be more accurate with the disc cutter than the author of that tho :icon_twisted:

Good find.......... got to do similar to my GC tow rig as holes are starting to appear........... and my skills of welding tissue are not that great....... :jpshakehead:

I want to do the same with mine - same principle of an XJ so if you want any other picture guides try searching on NAXJA and other XJ sites. I'll stick mine out from the body more than the link you posted - or at least the tube step part because the body curves in and nice tight tucked in ones don't allow you to use them as tree sliders enough in my view - I made that mistake when I built my rock sliders.

I installed rock rails on the xj it has 50x200mmx5mm wall box, the reason being 200 deep it mates with the inner cill = strength

we have done rock sills on three xj's to date. 100x100x3mm box cap ended and welded in place of the sills. can be jacked under and works very well but you need to be able to weld and be brave with the angle grinder. i am sure there are pics of all three on here. anyone who wants em doin get in touch via pm for our best price. :greggmo:

Mmmmnnn :jpshakehead: My ZJ has a nasty split rusty hole looking bit on the passenger side..... the side I didn't have to weld for the MOT last may :icon_sad:

So its 3m 40 of 100x100x4mm and 1m 60 of 50x50x4mm and some 4mm plate and off we go with the mig and disc cutter....... not in that order tho :icon_twisted:

Its either that or roll some thin 1 point whatever type body panel thickness steel  to shape and try my very slowly developing tig skills on a repair???

Nope its disc cutter and MIg..... :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_super: :icon_super:
