Immobiliser !! 97 2.5TD
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:22:55 AM »

Well I'm still waiting for the Security Card to get to my local Jeep Dealer !!.
Story so far....
Ran out of Diesel 16 days ago !!...dodgy sender unit, thought I had 1/4 tank !!. Managed to get some from local garage and started bleeding it through. Although turning , engine not firing. After about 20 goes (immobiliser on/off/on) etc and it was starting to fire up..(getting any air out of the line) engine stopped cranking altogether !.
Thought dodgy clutch switch (battery still OK) so by passed it...."no way Jose"! so....rang my brother who towed me home.
After 2 days recharging battery and all the usual checks, noticed the immobiliser led was staying on permanently  and unable to verify the VIN.
Books it into local Jeep Dealer and gets it recovered from home to there 2 weeks ago on Thursday.
Waited for the diagnosis....6 hrs later told unable to get into the system as the immobilser has frozen and they need a security card or something to use the DRBIII and this has to be mailed from Chrysler UK.
After 4 phone calls to them over the past (nearly 2 weeks) security card still not arrived!.
In the meantime I got in touch direct with May & Scofield (great and helpful guy there called Del) who confirms that without the security card unable to unlock the frozen unit and let it find the VIN. Worst case it could be a dodgy chip in the Immobiliser (almost 15 years old) and may require new immobilser unit that will need to be paired with fobs/keys etc by dealer. I only have to match the CIS 5010 code on mine from any cherokee, the serial no means nothing.
As I'm thinking the worst, managed to track down a secondhand immobilser with the same code for £35 ....Ebay. If i didn't buy it with 2 hours to go, you can guarantee it ...as sure as hens lay eggs that I will need one.
To date....Cherokee still at dealers, Mechanic was at Head Office yesterday for training anmd will bring the security card back with him if not sent !!.
I gather, its been poor service from Chrysler UK since they went bust and have I gather been taken over by Fiat ????......
C'mon...it doesnt take 2 weeks to mail out the security card.
I'll keep you all updated on progress as I guess this may happen to others

By the way....if I order a replacement ECU from the states and remove all the Immobiliser kit and then install the ECU....will that make my vehicle non immobilised.....and no longer subject to all these problems...would be worth the expense.

Don't worry the diesel running out will not happen again !!....since found out it's a common problem. Must have been lucky filling up when I got to 1/4 tank for the past 2 months!!

An extremely frustrated HKS  :011: :010:

You won't get a diesel PCM from the 'states 'cause they were never sold there. You could buy a new one in the UK, as the immobiliser doesn't shut it down unless anti-theft is enabled during installation, but that would cost more than the Jeep is worth. If you get a used M+S module, you still need a DRBIII to make it relearn the VIN and to program it to your remotes, unless you got some with it.

security card is actually a programme card from chrysler uk to allow drb to talk to your ecm and validate the vin number. the reason its taking so long is that drb111 is not used much these days ,ask the dealer if they have the drb emulator set up yet on there wi-tech. if they have then there should be no problems and the security card wont be needed. emulator is basically the drb 111 running via the wi-tech and is supposed to be the latest software version with all the security cards and add on programmes all loaded up ready. But as i said they may not yet have it and not many dealers are using it as its a bit iffy atm. no new software is being issued for drb as it is not used on current models. And yes they are right since FGA took over its bleedin shite..they are crap.

Got my cherry diesel sorted by getting a replacement ECU and all the alarm unit from the roof console from one vehicle scrap yard in Hull installed then use the DRB unit at friends garage to sort it , started no probs only check gauges light comes on. But that will be sorted.

Today the Dealer rings me to say they got the card and unfortunately cannot access the immobiliser unit.....ah ha...I said as I did a week ago !!... I have another immobiliser unit which they have asked I take to them ......waiting to see what happens next?
Please don't say I might also need to replace the ECU !!....is there any type or model I need......apart from a '97 2.5 ??????? :017:
Any other advice guys?....I'm almost demented.......
By the way, in my search of all things cherokee....I note there was recall for all fuel sender units in 1999 (Ref R/1998/070) requiring replacement with "quality assured fuel tank sender unit" !!....does anyone know if this still applies?

I cant believe simply runniung out of diesel requires a new immobiliser, possibly an ECU and whatever else !!!!!!

Well... I find out last week they had not even checked to see if the replacement immobiliser unit would work (they said they just didn't think it was the right one) I went down to get a picture of the existing unit and follow some great advice from our own TedtheFed and they confirmed they hadn't checked it od did any work (3 weeks after getting the vehicle) I confirmed I was very unhappy and came home to look at alternative options including breaking the vehicle.
Anyway I get some prices to get the Cherokee transported to EJM (Oxford!!) somewhere I have faith and was just about to confirm when the phone rings and its the dealer....."your vehicle is running and ready for collection!!.....
It appears there is a fault on the rear wiper that keeps popping the fuse (could be the switch as I have replaced the motor unit) and 2 other fuses a 30amp and a 15 amp in the engine fuse box had gone. the 30 amp had not gone completely but was only showing 3v on the multi meter...as soon as the ignition key was turned....nothing.
All in all they charged me £75 +vat ( bearing in mind the embarrassment of not looking at it for 3 weeks they just pit it down to a diagnostic and lost the 3 hours tracing the fault.
The Jeep is running great although the rear wiper is now disconnected until I can track the fault.
There is a morale to all this.....sometimes the faults can be a lot simpler that it may appear. Finding someone/somewhere that knows what they are doing would be a great help.
Del at May & Scofield has been fantastic and out own Tedthefed has been a great help too......and a shoulder to cry on and bounce a few ideas around.
I'll try and post a pic of the dodgy fuses later this week in case anyone else has a similar problem...worth a try anyway.
Right then.....anybody have experience of a dodgy rear wiper popping fuses....all comments welcome from the simplest to the most complicated solutions???

Cheers Guys

Check the wiring were it come out of the body to the tail gate.
That's where there most prone to ware.
Also known people replacing the tail gate by cutting the wiring and unbolting.
Then just taping the wire's back to gether
