Bugger
« on: December 27, 2005, 03:13:06 PM »

Had the cherry offroad for the first time yesterday and was v impressed.

Took it fairly easy but on closer inspection this morning and a bloody good jet wash i discovered a fist sized dent on the front diff.

Bugger.

This is why i was asking about underbody protection! I don't know how it happened, i didnt feel any graunching and i didn't tackle anything that seemed as if it would trouble the ground clearance. Drove quite a few deep-ish ruts but they were very soft and i'd be amazed if that was what dented the diff.

Drives fine, no unusual noises or anything like that so i might have got lucky...

My local breakers have a few pre-97 cherries in so i'll go up tomorrow to see if i can get a steering guard.

If somebody can show me how to post piccies i'll put em up!

Lefty talk to Gwyn at http://www.mountainjacks.co.uk/ or Mark at http://www.offroadmdg.co.uk/ and go for an armoured diff cover rather than putting a stock one on.  I have one of these http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestor ... px?id=1273 from Mark on my TJ.

I have the inexpensive Warn diff covers myself...both front and back.  They work fine and are about 1/2 the price of the Curries.

After spending what I did on F/R ARB lockers, I wanted to make sure I protected the diff cover.  Kizer has the Rockcrusher diff cover which is about the same price (maybe a little more) than the Currie set up.

Then there is always BlueTorch Fabs diff covers which are like 1/4" thick.

I'm very careful myself.  Just like my steering box, I put a Warn skid on it...even though I had never hit it once.  Then one day wheelin', I hit it on rocks when the front was sliding.  There was no way I could have prevented it.  The line I took was the correct one, just some rocks broke loose and bang.  So I did not install that stuff so I could hit it.  I installed it help protect me from the unseen or unknown events.  Same with the diff covers.
