LPG system ideas
« on: September 30, 2011, 02:01:31 PM »

just working out a way of reducing the daily running costs on the XJ, especially if/when i move and would be out of work initially. ideally buy a bike and leave the xj on limited mileage reduce insurance etc but that would leave alot sitting there.
So lpg the jeep to reduce the running costs slightly.

Idea move the petrol tank to below the passenger front/rear seat and fit 1 or 2 LPG tanks where the petrol tank used to be. The multi point LPG should be able to take a tee'd twin tank feed and the same principle for the fueling process. A concern is if the tanks are run in parrallel would they try and balance the contents between the two. another point is what will suitably fit under the rear without issues. 2xcigar tanks or 2xdonuts imagining and actual are possibly quite different.

any constructive ideas? rather than dont go there

or just sell it and buy a diesel mindy for pottering around plus bike

Why not go with a more standard LPG setup? Single 60-70l tank and small petrol tank in place of standard petrol tank? Or a boot tank?

If wanting different  and maybe more range I'd consider the 60-70l tank plus a smaller standard tank (40-50l?) in place of standard petrol tank and then have a custom petrol tank made for a space under rear seat area or wherever you prefer. That's not really a money saving option in my view though.

i dont want to lose any space in the back of the jeep, hence the idea of a smaller petrol tank under the lhs floor and a combination of LPG tanks under the boot. Initial cost might be high but useing selected used LPG components should keep it to a minimum. it's a case of what i can get parts vs cost of mindy or bike. Obviously i want to keep the jeep but just have to be realistic. If i can fill a twin lpg tank setup of 110ltr for say £80 and return an optimistic milage of 400+ then it becomes more viable option to keep along with a bike, still working on a guide of mpg 20/g

I get about 180miles from 56l of LPG. It's not the most fuel efficient XJ with the lift, tyres, extra weight etc. but it is using a multi-point LPG system. I think 400 miles tops from 110l is what you should work to.

The bigger the tanks under the boot floor the more clearance you'll lose. The diameter of my tank (56l fill) means a loss of 2-3" compared to stock petrol tank.
I have thought about the two LPG tanks and a small petrol tank elsewhere under the floor but I do so few miles now it's not worth pissing about with.

I can't help thinking these days it's got to be best to have a small car, probably diesel, that gives high mpg for all the boring trips we all make. Keep the Jeep for fun journeys and when you need it.

at this point it's early stages of throwing ideas around, and seeing whats out there for the right price.

You won't get more than an 80l tank where the petrol tank is, there isn't enough room. If you want more range you will need a tank in the boot. My stock XJ did 340 miles on a 70/58l fill tank
