Axle whine
« on: September 06, 2011, 01:10:16 PM »

Yeah I'm sure its completely normal for a Jeep especially with 120k on the clock. But I'm currently drawing up a list of what needs doing to the ZJ (4.0 Auto Orvis) as i am considering cutting my losses and moving to something else.

So what I have is a whine from the rear axle when its not under load, so I accelerate no noise, back off the gas and coast theres a gentle whine, its not major. So my question is.. is it normal or a sign of something serious? I know its difficult (impossible) to diagnose a noise on the 'net but you lot are a knowledgeable bunch.

It's due an MOT in a few weeks, the weathers getting worse so I think I'm heading towards a decent time to sell up. That then raises loads of decisions about what to replace it with...

I get the exact same noise on my ZJ, having just done a axle rebuild I know what it is, in my case its worn spider gears, left it as I will be fitting a locker when fluff permits but for now you should flush and refill with oil and ADDITIVE and maybe consider using 130 like in the tow pack.

Wow that sounds expensive! I'd get rid if I was you!

(How was that?)

Whine when coasting is generally down to worn pinion bearings. ££££
