Of late my 2004 Cherokee 2.8 CRD has started to idle unevenly. While it was never the quietest vehicle I've ever owned, it was pretty smooth at idle but over the last week or so I've noticed that when sitting stationary in traffic I can feel a vibration through the steering wheel. It's an auto so it's in Drive, but it doesn't improve putting it into Park or Neutral And the engine certainly seems to be a bit noisier than before - it's hard to describe, but it's not rattling, just noisy.

Any suggestions, guys, and might the two symptoms be connected?

if the engine has an irratic idle then it will input that vibration into the steering wheel and pedals. what might be a cause of the problem could be a sensor reading incorrectly, any error codes logged even though a check engine light hasn't been lit

I haven't yet had a chance to get it checked for error codes but I may take it to the local garage next week and ask them to check it as I have no way of dong it myself. I did read somewhere than you can check for error codes via some trick with the ignition key and the digital mileometer but couldn't make it work on my vehicle.

OK, I got the ignition key trick to work and it threw up two fault codes - P 1643 and P 0645. Now where do I find what they mean?

EDIT: Ooops, I should have checked the stickies! 645 relates to the Air Con circuit but it doesn't list 1643. Any ideas, guys?

Yes, for sure it's P1643 - I checked it again this morning before heading to work. I did find a reference to it - see http://www.permoveo.ltd.uk/tabid/122/OBD-Error-Code/P1643/Diagnostics/Jeep/Default.aspx - but all it says is that it's Engine Speed Output Circuit with no explanation of that that means. I've emailed my local dealer to see if they can throw any light on it.
