Hi everyone. Right, this is new to me. Just to fill you in; I had a 1997 cherokee limited around 2 years ago. loved it. Brilliant for loading up with mountain bikes etc. I had it for a year and used it daily but never went off road and kept it standard. Unfortunately it over heated and warped 2 of the heads, cracked one and melted all the wiring. (typical VM!) it cost me a small fortune and I had to sell it due to my circumstances at the time. Regretted it ever since so I have purchased a 2001 xj ltd td and I'm very happy about it

this has overheating issues that I'm going to sort. I want to prepare this one for off road! SO...

I live in Sheffield so will mostly be playing on lanes in the peak district. I've done a fair bit of greenlaning on a bike but never in a Jeep;

What lift kit do I need?
What tyres do I need?
Where can I get these cheap? I'm on a tight budget.
Will I need rock sliders/diff guards?

Would appreciate any info/advice! Tar!

Mods are personal to what youwant to do and cash to spend

general green lanes wont need thousands spent to complete.
Good tyres
small lift
recovery points

Most importantly drive smart.

Get some rock sliders made first - then you will be able to do most lanes including Hollinsclough and stanage without much of a lift - just a bit of sliding

a small lift (say 2") can be put together for no money at all, by using spacers if your springs are OK - and the spacers can be made yourself if you can cut and glue

AT's will do you in the peaks - but muds look better

fix the engine first, if you sort the overheating issues chuck some 235-75-15 muds on it and play before you blow your cash on anything else

Thanks for the advice. Definitely getting it running right first of all. It's handy for me having my dad who's a mechanic, my xj will be sweet as a nut in no time I'm sure. Can rock sliders be self fabricated or is it best to just buy them? We can weld, thinking of making some bars to protect the sills, worth the effort? might have a go at bumpers too with shackles for rescue. Going to buy a tir-for I think oppose to a winch (cheaper option). Had Goodrich AT on my Cherokee before, brilliant in snow and general on road use. Are these sufficient off road? and say I had a 2/3 inch lift what size would be best. I'm concerned if my mods are too much it may effect the drive shafts etc..

unless you are putting big tyres on or your rear springs are shot don't do the lift first. Transfer case skid plate and some sill sliders (easy to fab up yourself) will save you some bills for breakages. Disconnects for the front ARB are better than a 2" lift in my opinion

Dick why not come along to the Turkey Hunt on the 10th and 11th. It will be an opportunity to meet a few off us and so give you some sound advice and perhaps look at some mods we've done to our Jeeps. It may save you some time and money.

a set of All terrain tyres and cill guards, then you can learn how capable the jeep is when in std form. With being in sheffield the rock sliders will probably be in use alot.

your next concern will be ground clearance which will then put you into what lift do i want then you will go for slightly bigger tyres and the roundabout of modifications starts followed by complaints from the family as they then can't get into the jeep easily anymore.

get out and look at other jeeps for what lift and tyre size they have, if you can make it the turkey hunt is the next club meet

Well i'll get my xj up and running, full service etc. and probably fab some sliders up or buy some. I'd like to come to the meet actually, i'll see if my old man can make those days as he's the one in the know how. He bought a vitara a few weeks ago, he's envious already so i can see him in an xj before long!

Hi mate,

I am up in the Peaks for work most weeks, lovely area and want to take the jeep up at some point.

If you can make the Turkey Hunt there will be folks that will take you a run round and you will see what a standard jeep and a modded one can do.

The off roading is on the Sunday.

yeah that would be good. my dad can't make that weekend, in the process of trying to get a mate to come along. hoping i can get the jeep up and running for then!

give me a heads up if you decide to head out in the peak! hopefully have mine ready before xmas leave. i know of a few lanes. i'd like to tag along with others in areas i'm not familiar with eventually. i sense the start of something fun!

Even if you don't get the jeep running for the 11th come in what ever.

you will need to be the guide up the peaks, I am in Buxton for work twice a week but hrs are flexible!

no problem i know maybe 4 lanes fit for 4x4s and a quarry you can play on. the rest i'm familiar with from riding bikes might be a bit tight. Hopefully see you at the turkry hunt!

Nothing on my doorstep as it's just too built up around here. I'm just over three miles from the center of manchester, and Oldham itself is nearly nine miles away. Peaks are about the best nearby. Wherever I go it's a drive/time/petrol.
