Starting problems 2.7 crd
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:20:10 AM »

My 2003 crd has developed a major starting issue, without easy start it wont!! its only from cold after the engine is warm it fires up after a couple of seconds. Ive tested all the glow plugs and they are all working. About a month ago it started doing it, on checking it looked like the o ring seal on the fuel filter fitting (the black valve that seals down into the top of the filter) was leaking. I changed the fuel filter which initially completely solved the problem and it was back to starting fine. its now doing it again. ive rechecked the fuel filter and it appears to be fine with no evidence of any leaks around the fittings. Its like its got loads of air in the system it will crank over but just wont fire until easy started. Im looking at the black fitting on the fuel filter which appears to have some sort of return valve fitted to it. anyone ever have one of these fail?? and could that account for air in the system?? failing that anyone want to suggest some other areas to check?? ive had a look at all the fuel lines and connections that i can see-no obvious signs of leaks etc. when it starts it runs fine, almost like its bled the air out, but leave it overnight and its a right bugger to start again.
Would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony,
I searched out this forum for exactly that reason.
After weeks of difficult starting my 2.7crd '52 plate had to get the RAC to get it started ( with cold start, or "sniff" as he called it ).
Once running it was perfect so the RAC followed me to a local "general" garage who put the fear of god into me talking about this and that pump, engine dropping and a whole host of expensive possibilities, even suggesting I scrap it ! I only bought it last year for £6k ( yes, probably too much ). Gutted !!
Anyway, they gave me the name of a fuel injection specialist and £380 later it's been starting well for 3 weeks.
I've not got a clue about diesels, but he performed a leak test on all the injectors which involved 5 short plastic tubes, said there were air leaks so he ordered some pipes. "One from the filter to the fuel pump, one from the fuel pump to the HP pump, and one from the HP pump to somewhere ( I can't read his writing, sorry ) and it looks like a new nut on the first injector. He bled the fuel system too and checked for leaks again".
I've just copied this from his bill so sorry if it isn't technical enough.
It does seem that air leaks are a problem on these models so I'm prepared for future trouble.
Hope this helps,
Ged

I had problems with mine in 2009 not starting then when did start only lasted for 20 mins max. Turned out to be a fuel pump problem.

Your symptoms sound just like my 2.7crd did about 6 months ago. I went through all the fuel lines, filters, glow plugs etc, it would only start on easy start aswell. It turned out to be 2 bad injectors, you will need to get someone to do a leak off test on them to see which are bad. On mine it was number 3 & 4 injectors which ment the engine had to be lowered to take the number 4 out - yes its quite a big job and expensive too! I had the 2 new injectors put in 4 and 5 cylinders so the old ones can be taken out if needed in the future without the need to drop the engine!

Thanks for the replies, ive just about given up on the thing now, ive tried fitting a priming device to it just to enable me to part-ex it, that didnt work. i resigned myself to probably breaking it or selling it as a project, i simply cant afford to throw more money at it without a firm diagnosis which appears to be unlikely. big mistake buying the diesel version of this car, should of bought a petrol one and gassed it which was my original plan.

Mine did this a few months ago, and after speaking with the guys on here, i feared the worst that it was going to be my injectors, and in particular the last two (this is where the expensive engine drop is needed).

There is a clear pipe that comes from the fuel filter, and I could see lots of air bubbles in it, although I couldnt work out why I had air coming from the fuel filter to the injectors, if it was a leak at the injector.... anyway, I took mine to a diesel specialist in Reading, and they did the diagnosis while I waited.  He did the usual leak tests on the injectors and various other components, and in the end it turned out to be the seals in the fuel filter!  Somehow they had shrunk, and started letting air in.  I was kicking myself that I didnt change the fuel filter before I took it to them, as the bill was about £160, but it could have been much much worse.

I guess the moral of my story is try changing the fuel filter, it should only cost you about £10 and if it sorts the problem you can then sell it on, or you may grow to love it again!  I know the diesels have issues, but I do really enjoy driving mine (03 plate).

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do

I did change the fuel filter, was one of the first things i did as i had a doubt about it. (even though it was only a couple of months old) Ive tried the last few days putting a primer bulb into the system to try to draw fuel back into the system before starting it, unfortunately this didnt work, despite lots of pumping it wouldnt draw fuel up. Im spraying easy start into the filter to start it now this seems to be the only way to start it.  :jump_125:
