Grand Cherokee 2006 front diff locked 4.7
« on: January 23, 2012, 09:00:18 AM »

Hi,

Any ideas? How do these work? Clutches pack? Or problems with electrical side...

Jeep has just been serviced elsewhere with new oils throughout... wondering if the wrong oil/no additive could be the cause? Seems very strange as Jeep was perfect....

Thanks in advance Maf

Would it not be quickest to change the diff oil & put in the additive if needed to be sure ?

If the wrong oils / additive has been used in the past the gears could be chewed. remove the drain plug and see if there are any metal filings present.

If it's like other dana axles there is no drain plug, only a fill plug halfway up the diff cover.

To drain you loosen the bolts on the diff cover and drain into a suitable container. With cover off you will see the state of the bearings, gears. Any metal bits will be in the bottom of the diff.

To re-fit clean off cover apply RTV sealant and tighten bolts, fill with fresh oil and additive if needed.

All the best  :greggmo:

its IFS, not looked under one yet but should have a drain point on the Diff unit.

How do you know it is locked? I'd be jcaking it up and dropping the prop like IOM said, easy way to discount the transfer case and you don't need to drain oils

Mine has a magnetic drain plug on it, so would think the 2006 would have as well.

OK guys...

Diff now on bench, all looks fine with no metal parts/shavings in the oil etc.... How do these diffs select lock up mode? As it would appear the diff is in locked mode/setting...

Cheers Maf
