Molotov and the cherry bombs
« on: January 08, 2012, 11:52:14 AM »

Yet another cash attacking by product of the SOA on the Chief is that the exhaust system will need to be re-routed. Its currently a single tail pipe coming out the side behind the rear wheel and TBH was a long term plan to change it to twin pipes anyway, so time to bite the bullet.

However, there seems to be way too many choices for a humble tech numpty like me and none of the ads seem to say perfect for a 5.9 V8 so sling ya views my way please:

Size?
Length?
Diameter?
Back box?
Mid pipe?
Etc?

If you think there is a better option then feel free to say so.

Cheers gents

whats the realistic budget? it is worth checking out your local stainless steel custom exhaust maker, a good one will be able to tune it to the sound you want and lean it towards power or economy. for a twin pipe V8 system not inc manifolds you should be looking at £500 ish but it will out last the car

Maidstone exhaust center do custom s/s pipes, would be worth a ring for a ball park figure.

TBH don't go for the cherrys,
I've just taken mine off, they are loud, also they'll get an MOT advisory

Your MOT bloke is having a bad day. if two jeeps are parked next to each other then the loudest should get an advisory. If it's on its own and not blowing there is no reason for advisory.

IF they are that loud then you have a silencer that is too small.

The cherry bombs are sized to suit an engine size. For a 4ltr a 3" diameter body and +8" in length is a minimum size. If in doubt ring the manufacturer to see what sizes they recommend.

If your getting one made have it so that one end is removeble for repacking puroses

Bring in some series 40's from the US (cheap as chips) and use 2.5" pipe, thats what I have done and it sounds really nice, not too loud but just a nice V8 burble

same as anything you can buy there are quality products and cheap copies out there, my exhaust man is fitting some 7" x 2" stainless woven flex on Tonka but they aint cheap, on the plus side he will give a lifetime guarantee on them

Just saw this thread BD............. :jpshakehead:

Warthog put me onto Merlin................. got bits mail order and welded it up me self.....................

You can do anything..... big bends tight bends adapters h pipes and I chose the smallest box about 15" in length and well you heard it .stoopid quiet.
You can even change diameter half way down if that's your thing :017:

Cost me about £100................... Well a bit more cos i changed my mind.................. my feck up :icon_biggrin:

its down to application, I'm using flexys because the pipes will be hard mounted to the body/chassis so the flexy is needed to accommodate engine movement

pay the extra for the stainless steel as it is fair better quality but it's costly.
your looking for something like this
