Engine swap - best option
« on: March 01, 2012, 08:21:25 PM »

Thinking of putting in a new engine into the cj7 but want an easy option as v little space so thought I'd ask advice on what's best.

Obviously want a v8 but have to be realistic as good ones are v rare and aware only a few engines swap with mine as I have the iron duke 151 engine but without blowing thousands I thought I'd explore some options

Thanks for your help

Dans lil yella has a duke 151 and we have a spare 360 here that Dan has earmarked for his CJ, but from what I've seen that will mean a new gearbox, trans and prop shafts.

unlike going from a 256 to a 360 where most of the ancillaries will fit, 151 to 360 looks like we can only use the alternator and thats a long shot.

the other option we are looking at is a Daihatsu oil burner which should be a lot easier, saying that still trying to work out if the gearbox can be made to fit (to be honest not looked that hard yet)

have a read of this, looks like a common swap in early CJs if you have the SR4 gearbox using a combination of off the shelf parts

Think one of them (that or a Daihatsu TD) is on my long term shopping list.

Woah talk about quick response and great selection to choose from so I'll have to keep my eye out.

Def like the v6 idea and re furb tub going on this weekend so it can be rolled to the new garage so new engine planned for Easter / early summer.

I may b well off the mark here but my 4 gear box seems to have a ford stamp on it which surely can't be right?!?!

151 engine still ok but prior to over haul it smoked a bit when warm and had the over sized rings in it anyway so may be on its way out anyway

the SR4 will have a Ford logo cast on the top plate by the gearstick, not the strongest box but will mate to the 229 V6

So it should connect up to the 4.3 as well then.

Sounds like a good plan and be good to hear a v6 engine in it? I would presume it will be an ecu engine as opposed to my v basic hit with hammer to make work engine so will be worth getting the entire beast and picking what I need

What about picking an entire 4.0 Cherokee and steeling everything down to the axles? You would probably have to have some drive shafts made up but other then that it should be and easy project.

Chevy 262 4.3 v6 bolts to the iron duke bell housing use a painless wiring harness to wire it about $350
