2.5 VM Diesel no4 injector leaking at fuel line connection
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:01:47 PM »

Can anyone assist me on this one. Cus I'm starting to feel thick and defeated.

A I had the clutch changed in My XJ Cherokee a week ago. and since then I appear to have developed a leak from no.4 injector. (as evidenced by the pool of diesel under the car when parked after a run)

I am guessing that the garage (now sadly out of business) must have removed the feed pipe when they did the clutch to help clearance when the tilted the engine for access. Otherwise I can't account for why it should suddenly just start to leak.

At tick over I get a slight dribble, but under load I get a very fine spray. This has now soaked the engine in Diesel and has been a pug to clean off. She starts fine and drives without any problems so I'm kind of at a loss for the actual cause of this, but...the problem is there to be fixed so...

I removed the injector feed pipe form the injector and tried to re-seat it but it looks pretty worn and compressed. But still the thing has the same slight leak. I then took the pipe of from the pump and the injector and had a good look at it. there is a very slight pitting on the injector end that looked like it could have been the cause of the leak so I had a new pipe made up by Wellham Diesel in Leicester (£27 not bad I thought) and I fitted that a short while ago.

Guess what.....the damn thing is still weeping. (not as much as me though  :010:)

So now I am thinking that the seat at the top of the injector is damaged in some way. Looking at it it looks just fine, but I cannot account for the leak. It is defiantly not a leaking return pipe running forwards, and I have renewed them anyway today.

Has anyone else had this happen and...does anyone know if there is an alternative to the Jeep special tool to remove the injectors with / has anyone removed injectors from the 2.5 VM as I think I may have to bite the bullet and take the injector our to either swap it or get it reconditioned. Or can anyone confirm the socket size for the injectors? I think it is 28mm from reading a post on an old forum elsewhere. I have looked at the Laser 3299 socket and the Sealey SX025 injector extractors but I'm not sure if they are tall enough? Also do these things just twist out without too much drama or do I need to get my hands on a full kit with a slide hammer etc.?

New and old pipes together can be seen in the picture below.

You can see how the old pipe has been compressed and worn a notch into the fitting cone and in the other closeup picture you can just make out the corrosion pitting on the pipe end.

Thoughts gents please.

the injectors just screw out and no slide hammer is required. there only needs to be the special socket type for the no.1 sensor with the flying lead, but then you could just grind a large rectangle in the drive end of the socket to allow you to pull the cable through. the socket size is 28mm. 1/2" drive deep socket.

disconnection of the injector pipes has no effect on the amount of access when you change the clutch on the 2.5vm diesel (never needed to when i did mine years back)

the new pipe looks different to the old one in flare angle but that might be down to the camera

Doesn't look too bad - but as Daggie said make sure stopper is - though this would not normally spray

think I may have a set of pipes and an injector knocking about

too late to check and laning all day saturday though to check

Thanks for the answers guys. Yep the spill pipes are fine and the stopper is there. The weep appears to be coming from within the nut securing the union to the injector. I can't see an damage or cracks and the thing locks down ok but there must be something amiss.

I'm going to have to swap the injector and see what come of that then I think. I'll grab some more pictures of the removal and install process when I get around to it (once I find one that is)
