daft tyre questions
« on: June 20, 2012, 07:18:55 AM »

Ok so I'll more than likely sound like a complete muppet for asking but, will it be ok using a 225 75 15  on one side and a 215 75 15 on the other for a few weeks? as I want to get the XJ on the road and the part worn place by me only has 225's in

and the other daft tyre related question is   whats the biggest tyre that will fit without a lift kit ?

Biggest without lift kit to stop issues would be 235.

Any bigger & you can have rubbing issues, its also the biggest tyre that will fit as a full sized spare on the standard bracket in the boot with the back seat upright.

As for mixing tyre sizes, personnally I wouldnt, all tyres need to be the same to avoid potential drivetrain imbalancing issues  :icon_winkle:

Andy,

If its of any use I have got a set of wheels and tyres in my Garage in Bromsgrove, so not far away if it gets you out of a hole for a few weeks etc.

Ready to put straight on.

if they are the same make and wear there will be a 14mm (0.6") difference in diameter if different makes or wear there could be over an inch difference, so the short answer as above is NO

You're still going to need a set of 4 the same size though.

If you had freewheel hubs you could probably get away with having a slightly different size front to back, but I'd not risk it on an XJ.

Jay's offer sounds like a good one to me.

You looking at running 225 70 15 and then 225 75 15 so still 2 varying sizes.

just to make it clear, if ALL 4 tyres are not the same size you risk damaging your transfer box and that will cost more than a set of new tyres

Not in day to day driving, rubbed very very slightly when off roading but nothing to worry about.

Tyres are a world of pain!!!

The more you want the more it will cost you.

Late to the party but just to reiterate DON'T mix tire sizes.
And even different brands can have significant difference
In rolling radius even if marked up the same.
Please stick to same make same size or your drive train
Will chuck its toys out in a loud and expencive way!

You have been warned.      Again :003:
