US spec rear lights ....
« on: February 11, 2006, 05:46:54 PM »

Today I fitted the US spec rear lights that I procurred on Ebay to the Grizzly.

Although the casings appear the same there are subtle differences, the UK ones are held to the body with three self tappers, the US ones have three captive bolts so the original holes have to be made bigger.

The UK lights have four wires, indicator, tail, stop and reverse - earth is via the bolt / screw to the body.

The US  ones have only three wires as there are only two bulbs, stop/tail which also flashes as an indicator and reversing.

A little bit of jiggery pokery and the stop and tail work as standard, the reversing bulb is replaced with an orange one and this now acts as the indicator. The lower section of the light housing is clear and as the tail light is now at the bottom, this illuminates the rear number plate if put in the US location.

All very cool looking, except .... now I have no reversing lights and once the standard bumper is ditched for a Warn one, I will have no location for the fog light either ...

A fog light can be easily mounted, and a reverse light is not required for an MOT.

So it looks like mine then  8).

I mounted the fog light at the bottom of the rear right panel (where you have to have it). Got one from Halfords for about £6.

My reversing light is mounted on the top of the left rear panel as i had a bracket there anyway. Used my remaining spot light from the windscreen after i munched the other on at Slindon.

I want something a bit different for the fog & reversing lights, simple and uncluttered, was thinking of turning the high level brake light into a reversing light ?!?

Does anyone know the precise regulations regarding the rear fog light ???

Only I've got an idea ... I'm fitting a Warn rear bumper to the TJ and each end has ' W ' cut out of it .... how about fitting the fog light behind the right hand ' W ' so the light shines through (reversing light can go in same place on the left) !

Just thinking a bit. If you only need a fog light to keep the MOT man happy, why not have the light on a magnetic mount and bullet connectors? After the test disconnect it and either stick in the garage till next year, or leave it in the car in case it does actually get foggy (or plod wonders where it is).

My CJ has the same US spec rears. Don't know if a TJ bumper/cross member is the same but my reversing and fog lamps are mounted to the face of the cross member not under it.
