Just bought a V reg XJ Cherokee 4.0l. Loving it nand it drives great....once you get it started!
If its been left a while it takes a while to get it fired up and you have to keep your foot on the revs until it warms up or it conks out again.
Even when warm, it's still tricky to start.

Never had one of these before so a little unsure of where to start.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Forgot to add that also, once its started and I get going first time, I put my foot down, it goes a bit then dies off then comes back. Does this for a few minutes then sorts itself out.

Attach a pressure gauge to the test port on the fuel rail. You should get about 45psi when you are cranking.

First thing I'd do is charge and test the battery. Needing to keep the revs up for a while after starting before it will idle on it's own means it could be on it's way out. Once you know the battery is good, and the clamps and terminals have been cleaned on the contact surfaces so they are shiny, you can go from there.

New fuel pump maybe but do the test first - Mike knows what he's talking about.

I presume less than 45 means a new pump required?
