Yesterday i went into a mud hole too quick and the slop splashed over the bonnet. The engine almost stalled but picked up again straight away and i drove out. After that at low revs the engine seemed to misfire or die momentarily and then pick up again as i increased the revs. It was ok when i put me foot down.

I put it down to the electrics, gave it some wd40 this morning and it was running ok.

Its now started to do the same again and i have a check engine warning light staying on.. :shock:
Oh yeah its also idling very fast (15000 revs)

any thoughts gratefully received

Gently hose radiator the front and back until waters running clear both ways....see how that goes

stew  are you  on mars mate. dodster have a look in the airfilter box and see if there is a blockage. also check the crank case sensor on the passenger side of the bell housing, might just need a wipe.

Checked the airbox and washed the rad, think theyre ok,

Will have a look at the crank case tmrw  :D

Take the connectors off the MAP sensor, Throttle switch etc. and WD40 them all. A crank sensor problem would probably stop the engine.

Thanks Mike and uk..

Tried it this morning and now its cutting out after revving, still idling fast but when it comes down its as if it it drops too much then cuts out..

I wiped the crankshaft sensor, cleaned and wd40 Map sensor and other connectors still no joy....
I will try cleaning them out again in case i missed some...
Any other possibilities?

Thanx Stew, talking of mars watched war of the worlds last night.. god fx.
Hmmm the magic spray...

Update... disconnected the throttle position sensor, started it up seems to run ok, plug the sensor in while its running and it cuts out...

At the risk of appearing thick is this telling me that the sensor might be fecked... :roll:

Are you getting any error codes? - see http://www.jeepclub.co.uk/diagnostics.cfm

Probably on birtys somewhere as well, but that's just where I rmembered seeing it last !  :oops:

The codes ive got are
11. Crank sensor
12. battery pcm ??
24. throttle sensor
47. Battery volts below target

And 55 to confirm the fault lamp.

Changing the tps should be easy the crank sensor was covered in shite, gave it a good wipe but still got fault code  :shock:

I have cleaned the tps and crank sensor good an proper reconnected it an the engine will now tick over normally.

It still cuts out on the way back down if i rev it up and when driving it occasionally dies then picks up, occasional minor backfire and i still have the same fault codes  :roll:

what about oxygen upstream sensor? mandas used to do a similar thing, we changed the throttle position sensor and it still did it. it was a bad conection on the oxy upstream sensor. might be worth a try mate. 8)

I would lean in favour of the tps, still. We find a good first step is to disconnect the battery for about ten minutes, then reconnect and start up. Gives the ECU time to sort itself out. If it still misbehaves, go back to the tps for another clean up. Given the circumstances, I doubt you've actually damaged anything, most likely just dirty!

Thanks greggmo....I will try the oxy sensor although i did wipe it over earlier i will give it another go...

Thanks hoodoo i will try disconnectin the battery...

Are the fault codes generally gospel or can they be misleading?

I dont want to give up yet but i can feel Mr Westbury rubbin his hands together  :roll:

The fault codes can be very misleading.  it took Westburys four days to work them out last time Barbie was there!

Problem is, something goes wrong, throws everything else out, the engine management system decides it's a toaster oven and you get fault codes all over the place.

Turned out the problem was the crank position sensor which was the only code which didn't show! :roll:

like Hoodoo says disconnect the battery and let the system reset then try again.  if luck is on your side the first code will be where the problem is ............

I've also got the "check engine" light illuminated...(3 days after handing over the cash for the old thing...welcome to Jeep ownership.......serves me right for buying a cheap car  :roll: )...but can't get any fault codes to come up....is there a different procedure for a 98 Grand?

Does disconnecting the battery lead to a load of grief with radio codes etc?

Radio will have to be reset, unless it's one of those fancy things with a back-up battery, or an old manual thing like mine!

Quick update...

Tried everything with the tps and oxy sensor, disconnected battery, still left with code 24 tps.
Ordered one on fri from lighthouse, arrived this morning, fitted...

No more fault codes and running sound.. (so far)  :rock:
