2.8 CRD
« on: August 15, 2012, 08:52:16 PM »

I have a 2005 Liberty 2.8 CRD that will only warm up to a 1/4 on the temperature guage. If you cover the grill and stop air intake, the guage will rise a little but not to half way. Even if the aircon is put on the temperature still doesnt appear to rise.
Any ideas, why it wont warm up?

Is the thermostat stuck open and allowing to much water through?

Had it on a trooper yrs ago.

I recently had the same thing on my 2.5CRD and it was the thermostat. Got one from Jeepey, fitted it in about half an hour and everything back to normal. Seems to be fairly common on these motors.

You will probably find your fuel consumption will improve dramatically once it's working at the correct temp. Mine went from 15 litres per 100 kms down to 8.4 as soon as I replaced the thermostat!

I have swapped the thermostat housing, also had the ignition barrel out and repaired it to stop the key being pulled out in any position. Put it all back together,

I came to start it and it kicked in forr a couple of seconds then died and now wont start at all, not even a splutter, up til now it started on the first turn of the key.  :010:

I thought the immobiliser has activated? But the key (I only have one) remotely unlocks the car.

Any ideas anyone?

Fro memory, the chip which controls the immob sits very near the ignition barrel..maybe something got disturbed when you had the barrel out.

Just a thought.

There is a device that fits around where the key inserts into the barrel to read the code from the key, that I had disconnected and refitted after repairing the barrel. I have double checked to make sure there are no pins bent over, all seems ok. With the item disconnected the car still wont start plus I cannot lock the car with the remote. So I assume its working ?

So I dont know what else to try

Main dealer fix!!!

Thats what was thinking ............reluctantly  :011:     £120.00 just to look at it.

Having thought about it, I have had the battery out of the key fob for a few seconds  :banghead:, would the fob have lost its "memory"  and I assume I cannot reconnect it to the car myself and its the main dealer to reprogram to the car?

Wouldn't that have a Transponder Key.

Maybe removing the barrel has disturb the signal from the key to the sentry key module.

From what I understand, if the wrong key is used to start the truck then the engine will run for 2 seconds then shut down.

See if you can get a factory service manual, there is a lot of information about the Sentry Key Immobiliser system.

If you cant get one, I've got an 03 TJ manual with the info in. Don't think it would be that much different. :102:

Hi, yes it has a transponder key and yes it only ran for about 2 seconds then cut out when I tried to start it, after tinkering  :011:
The car used to start straight away before I changed the thermostat and removed the barrel etc
I can only think that disconnecting the key receiver around the barrel has done something or when I disconnected the battery from the fob  :017:

OK This gets wierder.

Trailered the KJ to the local dealer who has confirmed it isnt the immobiliser.

They reckoned it was the fuel pump in the tank not working, so colleted it back as a non runner and had a quick look today, chased the wiring from the fuel pump / sender into the car and found a connecter under the rear seat, with four wires but not sure which does what without removing the towbar and fuel tank, tested for power and three of the wires have not got power (tester light didnt glow) and one wire glowed a little bit, this I assumed was to the sender.
Fuel pump fuses are all ok theres two of them and the relay for fuel pressurising works fine off the ignition but the fuel pump doesnt operate, I had connected a fuel pipe direct to another source and had the car running until the fuel ran out in the container I was using.
So I am assuming a broken or trapped wire from the connector to the front of the car under the carpet, I assume this as I have had the complete interior out.

Carlos, it suddenly hit me, had the missus KJ trailered away to dealer with roughly same issues last year.

It was a broken/severed cable that was routed under the airbox, but it was a data cable I believe shutting the fuel supply down someway or other.

Was not visible to the eye I must add.

I checked mine but i didnt have any wiring under the airbox.

However this saga plods on, I trailered the Jeep to the local Jeep dealer and explained I thought the immobiliser had played up and left it with them. Rang back a couple of days later to check the progress and received good news, it wasnt the immobiliser but they thought it was the fuel pump in the tank, as they had had it ruunning by manually delivering fuel and wanted in excess of £350.00 to replace the fuel pump and even then couldnt guarantee it would fix it. At which point I quickly retrieved the Jeep back on the trailer, back to the yard where investigating the so called fault was within my capabilities. I found the lead with 4 wires under the back seat to the fuel pump and sender. A quick investigation found an open circuit, whey hey I thought, defo the pump, but with due diligence I thought I would check if I also had power to the pump, bugger no power, what was going on? If there was no power then the pump couldnt run anyway. Checked all the fuses removed the interior again just to check I hadnt trapped any wires, nope all good there. Several cups of tea later and head scratching resulted in a Eureka moment. I hae a sender assy out of a 3.1TD Grand Cherokee on the shelf and guess what it doesnt have a feckin fuel pump just a sender !!! Which left me to reconsider what it could be. We set about manualy drawing fuel out of a container and hey presto it ran albeit for a short while, so we tried a lift pump / filter housing off a 3.1 TD and the bloody thing ran perfectly tried the next day and it was working.
What a coincidnce the water seperator / lift pump had failed.
Went for a quick spin around the estate great only the check engine light had come on which I guessed was because the water sensor in the housing had nothing in it. So put on another lift pump / water  seperator today and bled the system the Jeep starts but the feckin check engine light remains on.  :011:

How do you check to see what error code is on the ecu by turning the ignition on / off and how do you read it?

Within five seconds and without starting the engine turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on. Leave it on the third time and the codes will display in the odometer followed by "done"
