Bottom end rebuild in situ 4.0 cherokee facelift
« on: January 05, 2013, 08:25:52 PM »

Due to a bum steer from an arse of a marshall my cherokee injested an overdose of water. Had the valve cover off and all is ok. Engine runs ok but knocks like mad, bent rod possibly ? Engine out is not possible due to restraints in my communal car park and i want to do the ends and mains while its apart so need to know if its possible to do in situ. I have a 3" lift so axle is fairly clear of the sump.

I'm fairly sure the answers yes, but your probably better off with an engine swop given the price of them.

engine swap! you ain't ever gonna do a good enough job with it still in, plus you need the crank out to do the mains, for £200 or less & less work it's job done! I'm quite sure some kind birty could lend you some drive space to do it, 4 hours job done.

Just did rings and big ends with engine in place on my TJ. Easy enough with plenty of space. But don't know about mains.

Replacement engine is fine if you can source one that you know is good, try and get one roughly the same year as yours to keep the switch easier, the problem with second hand is that even if they offer a warranty they are often not tested fully, a quick start up is all some engines get in a breakers, we've had three duff motors sent in 2012.

Personally I would take the head off and see if all the pistons are reaching their top position. My advice is leave the manifolds on and the job is easier, you'll need a deep 1/2" socket for head bolts otherwise standard tool kit.

Good luck and keep us posted.

It would be easier and cheaper to just buy another XJ. The one you have only cost £200, it will cost more than that for the rebuild.

Im not going to find a good facelift xj for £200 again am i. This one was a pure fluke. The jeep is in excellent condition mechanically except enginewith brand new lift kit. I seen no reason to break it.

My last remark was in answer to robsrotti telling me to buy another cherokee as mine was so cheap.

For what it's worth, I'd buy myself another motor, strip and rebuild it until I was happy and then spend the day changing them over..you'd end up with heaps of spare parts....and a warm, fuzzy feeling at the end. Just my thoughts.

:iagree: Would seem to be the most convenient option & a win win with all the extra parts to either keep or sell on then weigh in whats left  :icon_winkle:
