Transmission, Diffs........ or both?
« on: December 14, 2012, 05:48:25 PM »

Guys,

My `96 ZJ has developed quite a whine, a read a thread earlier about a CJ6 (I think?) with a whine like a stuka and leaky diff and figure that as mine looks leaky too this is the problem.

Also there a bit of a leak at the gearbox, or it could be the transfer box- I`ll have to take another look.

So, from the suggestions on the CJ6 thread I need a fluid change and a good clean right?

Where`s the best place to get seals and gaskets for both (UK if possible)?

How do I identify what axles I have?

Cheers

Jamie........If the whine is like a whore that has not been paid, then you are well and truly fooooooked!!
Your bearings are FUBAR and require changing, NO amount of lubrication (including KY) will lessen the pain, you really do have to man-up and seriously consider a axle rebuild.

Diff ate itself the other morning, so had to bite the bullet and just bought an axle- £150 delivered, wth a 30 day waranty.
So an axle swap to do, my first, is there anything I will need to make the job easier? Am I likely to snap any bolts or ruin any bushes which will need replacing?
Rather have any bits here before I start

soak all the bolts in penatrating spray a few days before you do the job (and keep doing it) especially in this weather.

Jamie - keep in mind that the new diff will need new fluids - is it an LSD? cos if so it will need some diff additive

Do you know that the bearings in this one are ok?  - I had to re-build my ZJ diffs every 50K!!

the only niggle is if you intend to remove the shafts from the axle - cos if I remember right the retaining bolt in the diff is something wierd like 0BA (an old electrical size spanner!)

Good Luck

Did this job a couple of months back on the workshop floor. It's pretty straight forward. Front was real easy, took a couple of hours but the rear took a fair bit longer, mostly due to the brake lines and handbrake cable being a bit of a pig to remove plus the exhaust needed pulled.

The only advice I would give is to lash penetrating fluid on everything and make sure you have a proper brake pipe spanner, you'll need it. Other than that it's just a case of taking your time and enjoying the job. Literally the hardest bit is removing the handbrake cable and lining the new axle up again.

Can't understand why you'd want to remove the shafts from the axle but if you do a small (I think 1/4in but don't quote me) 12 point ring spanner works perfectly fine. It's not needed for this job though unless you want to replace bearings/seals.

Thanks guys,

It`s the front axle thats getting swapped, and I`m doing it in the snow on the drive! Bolts all sprayed
Hopefully it`ll be here today and I`ll get tomorrow at it.

Dead easy, unbolt the bottom of the shocks, hang the calipers up, track bar off, prop off, control arm bolts & drop it with the steering arms!

Oh yes the front axle is very straight forward, few hours will do it.

Any easy check is take the front prop of and go for a drive to eliminate that.
