wj 2.7crd fast idle
« on: April 20, 2013, 05:00:21 PM »

Not long had my wj and its a 2.7 crd. Noticed from getting it temp is between 55 an 70 and takes an age to get there. Now today with hotter weather noticed that when not in a gear and revved the engine comes down and idle at 1200. Drop it unto drive and it comes down but take it out and then rev it it is back at 1200 . Not happened to date and its the first time the engine has been on a run ti get really warm.

Do i get the thermostat and the temp sender changed or could it be something else that isn't temp related????

Possible air leak, look around the induction.

Suppose it could be but only does it when really hot (first hot day of year today lol). When i have cooled her down a bit temp down to 55 she seems to idle ok again. Just wondered if it could be confusing the ecu with the thermostat not functioning right or the temp sensor perhaps not functioning right. Will check induction tomorrow. But just to say started her up again after an hour and not cold so warm... Idled like a dream so it seems a hot problem

Can't find any apparent leaks

A diesel's speed and idle is controlled by varying the length of injector timing and unlike a petrol engine it doesn't use a butterfly to control the amount of air entering, within reason, an intake leak has little if no affect on its speed.

On the CRD there is a throttle cable running to an electronic throttle controller at the rear offside of the engine bay. If you plug in a basic scanner with the ignition on and the engine off, you can check the unit and that the cable is returning properly, it should read 0% and gradually raise to 100%and back again as you slowly push the pedal down and release, test it with the engine bay hot and cold.

While you've got the scanner on check that the temperature sensors around the engine are making sense, these are what the ECU's are using to calculate their actions.

Time to buy a scantool then lol. So in summary it could be throttle related or temp related. Would throttle related be the case even though when i drop it into drive it come back down an stays there till revived again. Typical though. Could not get it to do it today lol... I think getting the thermostat changed and getting the sensors checked is on the agenda as the engine temp hardly gets above 55...

Get one from eBay or Amazon.  Why resort to guess work and almost certainly wasting £30 or so needlessly buying a new sensor. For less than £20 you can get yourself a perfectly useable scanner, it's yours for good and can be used on most cars you're likely to buy in the future.

Even if you don't fully understand what it's telling you, it will point you in the right direction and could arm you with some useful information for posting on sites such as this.

Borrowed a cheap one. No error codes but does not do realtime sensor displays so i may take you up on your offer I'll pm you
