A friend has just bought a 2.5 XJ for his daughter but it has a couple of issues that nees sorting. Can you override the fact you have to dip the clutch to start it by adding a fuse behind the glovebox? Also the lock / unlock fob dosent work but the central locking does off the key?? mmm sounds like the battery. Any ideas?

My two bobs worth..get a new battery in the fob for a start. The clutch safety switch is a Jeep feature..some have them, some don't, but have to admit I've never heard of the fuse being behind the glove box..mine is in the fuse box. Lucky she didn't buy a KJ..mine chimes for 5 seconds before I can start it and for 2 seconds afterwards..letting the ECU do its work. I don't compain though..33 mpg in town and 38mpg on the highway works for me.

Thanks for that, he said it would help offroad if you could start it with no clutch for obvious reasons, i suppose there must be some sort of sensor on or near the cluch that you could hold open permenantly??

Either there or a switch on the clutch pedal itself..mine works fine, so I've never had a look.

So is it a simple manner of unplugging it and you can start without dipping the clutch?
Have wondered if mines a bit iffy as regularly have minor starting issue sometimes two or three attempts from cold once the engine turns over she fires straight away Thinking its probably starter or battery etc but would be nice to tick that switch off the possibles list before investigating further!

my xj diesel beeps about 5 times when i put the key in ,and i also have to dip the clutch to start i assumed they all did that?

I'm not too familiar with many of the other models, but of the three that live in my area, mine is the only one that has the 'wait to start' and 'wait to drive' chimes. Can be a PITA sometimes, but gives me time to put on the seatbelt before I start the motor.

I suppose it was a safety feature, seems a simple enough fix, thanks for the replies ill pass on the info.

As a failsafe, the switch is likely to be normally open, which means it will make contact when you push the pedal down and allow starting. If that's the case then pulling it would disable the starter, if you wanted to do away with it, then you would then need to pull the connector and link it out.

Manual boxes aren't the norm in the States, so it appears that they're a bit paranoid about allowing them to start in gear.

Indeed, isn't there a chime to say key is in the ignition AND the door is open, and another for ignition on without driver's seatbelt in (only when turning ignition on though) - That's what mine seems to do (well, without thorough testing of all scenarios, of course )

As I said earlier, I'm not too familiar with other models, but my KJ gives off a slow chime if I put the key in the ignition while the door is still open, close the door and turn the key to the 'start' position, press the clutch and the chimes become much faster..start the motor after they stop and it will chime again for a few seconds until she's happy. Put it into gear, ready to drive away but without your seatbelt on and the chiming starts again, very urgent and loud this time. She also chimes if the tailgate glass is up or the hood isn't latched properly.. I get a flashing warning in the overhead display at the same time. One of the strangest things (and I really don't know if other models can do this)..before start up, press and hold in the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on', but do not start the motor..every gauge needle will move to preset positions (usually three or four), the odometer will jump up to 999999 and then back to 000000 and count up to your correct mileage..every warning light will flash on for two or three seconds (mine has 23 lights) and when the test is complete, everything goes back to normal. If you take your finger off the trip meter button before the test is completed, or start the motor, it just reverts to normal. My service manual describes this test as a weekly requirement, or after any changes have been made to any system.

Like I've said before..strange creatures, these Jeeps.

The clutch switch has been standard in the states since the mid 70's. We don't use the hand brake religiously and normally leave the transmission in gear when parked.

I drove a ford here last month that had it so it maybe coming this way.

Quite a few of the Hyundai models have had the clutch switch for over 15 years now..PITA, until you get used it. I use the handbrake and leave her in 1st or reverse whenever I park, mainly because that was the way I was taught 55 years ago.

Looks like a much more common feature these days, the other half has an Astra that does it as well. Not that I'm complaining mind, it's hardly an inconvenience

They can be a bonus at times..I well remember a fellow mini bus driver whom I knew well, reaching in through the drivers window to start his 18 seater Toyota Coaster..the guys in the lunchroom weren't too impressed to see the extra 'guest' come in through the window!!

I don't even notice the push button to get the keys out of the steering column on my tj. Bit I can remember spending plenty of time searching around the floor of my cj because the ignition was so warn the keys would fall out of the dash while driving. It was a bit embarrassing at time because I couldn't turn it of until I found them.

I've heard that problem gets worse as you get older.
