Smoke from behind wheel
« on: May 19, 2013, 06:45:40 PM »

I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited.

Drove from Chester to home in Oldham and when pulled up there was a black smoke billowing from behind the Drivers Side Front Wheel.

It stunk of rubber and carried on for about 5 mins.

I don't think it is the Brake Pads as they were replaced in January.

What the Bloody Hell could it be.

Corrected for you.
Get a rebuild kit for the offending caliper.

just been out in it.

In neutral it just rolls down the hill, dab brake it stops, releases brake and it rolls down hill.

Went for a quick run and all seems OK.

Really can't see how it can be a siezed caliper. Next door neighbour had this on his Subaru and the Disc was glowing red hot when it occured, this is not the case with my Jeep.

I am however concerned about this in case it re-occurs.

yeup, more than likely a seized caliper ... if you leave it a while until it cools you wont be able to replicate the problem just by freewheeling it, whats happened is its warmed up, the pads have grabbed and everything has heated up and expanded like mad, gotten really hot, had one of mine on the xj on fire once, once it cools it frees up because all the metal shrinks until you hit the brakes hardish again then it starts all over again, tis shite behind the piston gaitor stopping it from moving inwards, on a grand the stinking rubber is probably a combination of all the shite the piston gaitor and the cv joint gaitor getting a bit warm.

and expect wheel bearing to go soon - as grease will have been cooked out of it.
