Advice on steel floor bracing / top hat section
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:27:04 PM »

Before the new floor goes in on the 8 I want to replace some of the steel top hat bracing that strengthens the floor
I'm sure this is a universal item but where can I get it from?
Total width incl flanges, 4 inches, u-section, 2 inches
Total height inch & a quarter

When I replaced mine I just used box section, stronger easier to get hold of and easy to work with. If you want you can use a slightly deeper section to give a slight body lift.

Yes, I was thinking that this afternoon after spotting some box section in the shed, agreed it would be a lot stronger.
Do you think I should tack the new floor in place before taking the tub off to save twisting or will it not make much difference? It's still pretty rigid due to the bulkhead & the rear floor.

Up to you, I would say it will move a little as the floor would add some considerable rigidity to the body. You could just tack it in or take some triangulation measurements in a few specific places and check those before you weld it back together. I never had to repair the amount you are having too, I just had small non specific sections to do. One thing on the replacement of the tophat section, make sure you make some good reference points for this, especially where it changes angle or extends past the body etc. Tack it in place and then stick it back on the chassis to make sure it all lines up.
