Warning lights and error messages?
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:55:38 AM »

Hi all
I hope that you can help me here.
I have a 2005 (55 Reg) Grand Cherokee CRD.
Yesterday I went up to the Lake District to collect a caravan, about 200 miles each way. On the way I called in at a friends house to pick up some stuff so added about 50 miles to the journey. I sat and waited for the caravan owner to arrive at a service station on the M6 before proceeding to the caravan site and as I was pulling out, following the owner I heard a little bump at the rear and the ABS and TC lights came on as well as the display "Service 4WD System" and alternately "Service Electric Brake System". I drove on for about 25+ miles not noticing any difference in the cars performance.
We arrived at the caravan site and I hooked up the caravan and when I restarted the warning lights were still on and so were the messages still alternating. I drove for about 30+ miles and pulled into a service area for a cuppa and a bit of a stretch and when I restarted all the lights and warnings were gone. Great thinks I, for about 5-6 miles and then back they came.... and stayed on all the way home 150+ miles.....
Any ideas what is causing this please?
TIA

Daft question but are your tyres all at the same pressures, I know the Panzer & other such electronic 4x4 systems do like to have their pressures & tyre depths all matching to stop in balances in the drive train.

Firstly you need the car scanned for fault codes & go from there.

Good luck

Werd. Could be a wheel speed sensor, but take it to a dealer and get it scanned.

Dealer scan needed, sometimes they get warnings that disappear but yours sound persistent

Thanks for the replies chaps, I am going to get it read when I can get over there. I have had the "service 4WD" light flash on once or twice before but when restarting the engine it has disappeared, thought it odd. Haven't been out to look at it today, so don't know if it is still there or not yet, must look later.
Thanks again

I have just re read this and funnily enough I recently had the valve (TPMS) in a rear tyre replaced as the original broke. On nearly every start up I get the message that I have a flat tyre on that corner and the pressure reads 0 when there is in fact nothing wrong. After a couple of miles it then reads the correct pressure... I am having the garage that fitted it reprogram it next week, so I wonder it the cars computer has misunderstood this and thrown up these messages?

Off to the tyre shop tomorrow then, with a bit of indignant attitude :(  :97:
I will report back for prosperity

I took it to the tyre shop that sold and fitted the TPMS valve. They did a lot of head scratching and finally admitted that they did not have a clue to what was going on as they couldn't programme the TPMS system and the guy that knew wasn't there. They asked me to come back next week when they will have their "expert" get on the job. Apparently the other valves are not reading correctly (funny that isn't it?) and they are to worried to try putting pressure in the tyres in case they break something (I am really not impressed with their technical competence in any way, shape or form...).
In the meantime, a friend of mine offered to scan the car with his laptop, he is a mechanic and has thousands of pounds worth of code reading and diagnostic software on his laptop... He has diagnosed that the problem is a faulty wheel speed sensor on the rear left (coincidentally the wheel that had the new TPMS valve fitted...) and it is going into the local Jeep specialist tomorrow to be sorted out.
Moral of story..... DO NOT LET A TYRE FITTER TOUCH YOUR CAR
Hopefully this will be an end to this problem.

Today at TCJ Jeep in Northampton, they fitted a new rear wheel speed sensor and reset the electronics, all is well with the Jeep again. Tha truck drives much better now that it is sorted :)
Great service from Tom and Ben today, can't recommend them highly enough :) Excellent guys.
