Lift
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:45:15 PM »

The US sites that I have checked state that to run 35s on a CJ with a 4" lift and no bodywork cutting/trimming it also needs a 3" body lift.

4WD's Tech forum also says that its military wrap springs need lift shackles to best operate.

I have order a 2" body lift, and Phat Phux are making the shackles.

My question is: Should I go for 1 or 2" shackles, would 2" be too much?

One problem with 2 inch lift shackles(being 4 inches longer than standard) is they have a tendancy of digging in on steep declines!
I think greggmo's advice is good, see how you go first and if you need more room, then look at the alternatives.

You need the longer shackles because the springs are more arched, so end up longer when flattened. If the shackles are too short they will limit flex and could even cause the spring to get stuck in an iverted arch if pushed too far.
When you get your new springs you can measure the overall eye to eye length and compare with stock. This should give an idea of how much extra length you need on your shackles to allow proper flex without having unnecessariliy long ones.

My query isn't so much 'are +2" shackles too long?' , more a case of 'is a 4" lift plus 2" BL plus 2" shackles too much combined'? Considering the Yanks suggest 4" lift plus 3" BL.

I believe Jason (Dark Rider) was using +2" shackles without a problem.

You'll need the extended shackles else the springs can't work properly like Mike said.

If the yanks are runnung a 4" lift, regardless of how much body lift they have, they're running extended shackles too.  If they're not running the shackles they won't get full articulation and the suspension will be, well like not having any!

Hi Mark

I run 2" shackles on my cj7 with a 2.5 inch lift. Greggmo made them for me and they work great with my 33" tyres. I have never had any problems after we gor the width right. The back is a different size to the front.
