Hard starting XJ
« on: February 21, 2014, 06:11:55 PM »

The XJ played up last night - I'm sure it's a one off, but want to check with you guys in case there's something else worth looking for!

After lots of idling then lots of hard driving, then 20 minutes driving at about 1mph in low range, the XJ was not surprisingly running quite hot (electric fan on, temperature gauge just over 100, and lots of normal hot Jeep smells).

We then stopped for a BBQ, but as it was dark I left the Jeep running to light up as we got everything set up. After 10+ minutes of idling it was still really hot, and it started to lightly misfire. I waited until the fan went off, then shut it down.

In the next couple of hours the air temperature plummeted (we were high up on Dartmoor!) to 0 degrees, so the XJ probably cooled quite rapidly.
Upon starting the Jeep up again, I had to crank it for a good 15 seconds, whilst it spluttered and coughed, then it finally started as I let go of the key. Once started it ran perfectly.

Was that just due to the unusual temperatures (extreme hot to very cold), or do I need to check something?

Cheers 'Dastards!  8-)

what you need to check out is a plush hotel with ya woman rather than skinflinting it with a bbq on the moors - you think you're blagging it with romance but she has thistles in her ass cheeks and aint happy

As Gaz has witnessed my xj used do similar after heavy off roading session. Re started and was fine.

Did it a few times when out but never an issue.

I'd be the same if you left me steaming up for 10 mins in the middle of the moors while watching you cavort over a BBQ. Hard to start, I'd have run you over.

Oh by the way, my missus thinks you're a tight bastard giving your woman such a Valentine's treat.

Try to reproduce the scenario but ending up back at your own place, in the light, then you can investigate and try to find a resolution that always works even if you cant find the cause.

Thank you for the errm... "useful" replies guys! :003:

Just FYI, I was having a BBQ with 3 of my friends, so it was nothing to do with Valentine's day!!

And a genuine thank you to Jhay - I think I'll just assume it was from the temperature if it doesn't make a habit of doing it!

why would you need to be in low range, the jeep is still very capable in normal high range. check if the viscous coupling is foobar as running at high temp the fan should be locked. the jeep will get very hot if spending time in low range, might be worth thinking about adding an electric fan upgrade

I'm not too worried about the actual temperature it was running at - it was still within the limits of normality, and was doing a fine job of keeping itself there, it was just at the outer edge of those limits!

Low range just made a lot of the stuff we were going over a lot easier as we had four people in the Jeep, plus the boot loaded to the ceiling, and my brakes need looking at soon so low range stopped me from having to ride them constantly, as I wouldn't have wanted to go any faster than about 1-2mph in most places!  :003:

Shutting down when at high temp can cause a vapour lock in some engines..takes a bit extra cranking on the next start.
Piston engined aircraft are notorious for this! Unless it was happening in other scenarios, I wouldn't be concerned..it's worth considering a better/bigger fan set up though.

IMHO Fuel vapour/starvation due to temp
Few cranks on starter re primes. Similar feeling to running out/running low on fuel.
