CJ7 rear axle seal
« on: March 08, 2014, 06:19:46 PM »

got to replace the rear axle seal on the jeep. Is this a fairly simple operation as it looks or am in for hassle taking the shaft out?
Don't want to start then find i need a shaft puller etc or another special tool.

Dave,  I have to do mine as well. Had to do it last year but started leaking again.

Me, ex vice president of the WTFIAS club.  Guess who the president is. :hysterical:

Fairly simple. The only thing is to work out how all the brake bits fit together again. adjusters, clippy wire lead thingies and brake shoes.

The routing of the cable is quite tricky.

Once you got the whole lot dismantled, brake incl. back plate the shaft comes out easily.

I always stop at not having a size 36 or thereabouts ring spanner to undo the nut.

don't you mean 33.5mm or 1.5/16 socket.

what you describe is the easy bits, normally getting the shaft out can be difficult. Some web instructions indicate slide hammer and pullers.

Once done i will let you know how hard it actually is then we can sort time out to fix yours again  :icon_biggrin:

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough.

I actually did it last year.

Once all the brake bits were off the shaft (hub still attached) slid out like nothing.

I suspect this shit crown replacement seal from lighty's just is not up to the job.
