Click/knock noise
« on: May 12, 2014, 01:26:32 PM »

Just a quick question -

The XJ is developing an audible click which I can hear with the windows down. It seems to occur mostly when applying power in reverse with the wheels turned (e.g. parallel parking, turning around etc.).

I'm guessing UJs in prop-shaft or axle. The XJ is in 2wd at the time if it makes a difference.

How do I check them, and are my thoughts correct?
Cheers!

Also, I know this is similar to Mike's problem, but didn't want to take over his thread in case it's not related!

Quick thought...are the UJs and spline fitted with grease nipples? If they are, give them a dose of grease. If the noise stops then your question is answered...sooner or later you will have to attend to the problem.

UJs don't come with grease nipples unless you buy them fitted. HD type lasted longer than the grease nipple type

my UJs came with nipples fitted and after 14 years and 272,000 kms seem to be doing quite well.
