XJ window won't go up
« on: January 01, 2015, 02:20:56 PM »

I don't think the XJ likes me lately.
Not content with no heater, it also wants to keep the passenger window open for me.

I went to close the window last night, to find that the motor spins happily, but the glass doesn't move at all. I'm guessing something's snapped somewhere. Does this mean replacing the whole regulator assembly?
What's the best way to get it closed for now?

Take the door card off and push the glass up from the inside then fix with tape?

Someone else might have a more sophisticated solution

That was the plan I was going for. I might try to wedge it instead of taping though, so it's slightly less unsightly.

The Jeep is garaged at the moment, so it can wait until I'm hopefully feeling more active tomorrow!

Had this with my XJ and ZJ. The motors are fine but the rest of it is a bag of sh1te. Try opening the window with a modicum of frost and the fecker breaks. James is right with his advice, but before you take the door liner off (and break half the clips  :jpshakehead:) try dragging the glass up with your hands either side. If it goes up it will probably be at an angle so might stay wedged until you can get to the breakers.

Yeah, the motor sounds perfectly healthy now. It was struggling for a while before this.
I'm wondering now if the window might have been knocked when my friends climbed on the roof last night. I can't remember how open it was at the time.

Annoyingly I can't get a hold of the glass at all as it's right at the bottom. I've taken the door panels off plenty of times though, and the clips have mostly been fine.

If the motor sounds healthy now the rest of it was about ready to go fubr so don't blame your mates. Hang on a minute! WTF are your mates doing climbing on the roof.

Haha, I'm still happy to blame them. They find sitting in the roof basket fun. Not that I ever condone that kind of irresponsible behavior.

So am I right that it's the whole regulator that will need replacing?

Cheers Daggie, that's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. I'll take the door apart soon to check before ordering anything though.

Thanks Gaz, I've jut got the regulator out of the door so am inspecting thoroughly. The little piece that Daggie linked to is definitely broken, but I'm trying to check that that's all that has gone.

Hillbilly, they always ask me before doing anything like that, and I let them because I'd rather use my Jeep for fun than be precious over it without enjoying it 8-)

My pass side window went last year, half hour to replace the regulator, job done. Remember that EVERYTHING needs to be connected or it won't work when checking. (Inc power mirror feed)

Cheers for that.
I've got it to stay up for now. I took the door panel off, removed the whole window mechanism, then separate the track from the motor an everything else. I squeezed the track in the vice so that if the window drops, it'll struggle to fall quickly.
I've then put the track an glass back in, pushed it to the top and securely wrapped some wire around the track so it can't slide down.

I can't really afford the fix from the 'States, or a new regulator, so I think I'm just going to have to go for a £20 use replacement for now. If it goes again then I'll reconsider.

if you can get a used one for £20 then rip their arm off.

Usually around the £50 mark.

I bought a new one for £70 imported from far east for my drivers side

Oh, a mid size self tapper screw between the glass and door frame (on the inside) will keep the window closed until you sort it properly.
It's what I done. Was able to pick up a pair of regulators off Taz for around 30 notes IIR. :)

Cheers, but I've got the window staying up well  8-)

I've just ordered the £20 regulator. They've still got a driver's side one for £20 posted if anyone is after one!
