CJ brakes

Any tips on sorting my rears on the CJ7. I've put new shoes and adjusters in, rolled the adjusters out so I could only just get the drums on, then took it out for a spin and they're working but only just. And the park brake is barely working. Should I now move the adjusters so that the brakes are slightly catching? Or will it adjust itself, looks like it only adjusts if you brake in reverse :smt102 weird.
 Jeep is currently SORN, am' I allowed to drive it if I'm going for MOT?

as far as i know you are ok to drive it to the station if the mot is booked.

Sorry, can't help on the rear brakes

aint never had a set of "auto adjusters" that have worked.......is there an access hole at the rear to be able to adjust them in-situ??

as for drivin it to the MOT station, yep so long as its booked in, therefore plod can phone them to check......then you are legal!! 8)

i guess that you adjusted the rear brakes with the hand brake cable adjuster slacked off before setting the brake shoes???? and then set the hand brake cable??????and wile i'm at the shoes you have fitted the leading edge correctly???? that is in wheel direction????

Yes to all IOM, as long as there is only one place to adjust the handbrake, where the cable goes from 1 to 2 wires.

Ta, Yes KD there is a slot right by the star wheel adjuster, I can adjust them up, but if I go too far will I be able to slacken them?

you should be able to.......esp if the self-adjuster mech is a little worn...

have your drums got a ridge on the outer lip, cos dont forget if they have, your shoes will be slack inside when you have pushed the drum back on........probably telling granny how to suck eggs here.... :roll:

Once the drums are back on, I normally adjust them up until you can JUST turn the drum by hand.  Then cos it's a Jeep I have no handbrake again after about 10 miles! :roll:

When I did mine........

After refitting the drum and put the wheel back on, I adjusted the shoes with the star adjuster throu the back plate until the wheel wont move, then backed off so I could just rotate the wheel with some resistance. Did both sides the same.

Used a couple of screw drivers throu the back plate to back off, 1 to push the adjuster lever off the star, the other to rotate the star adjuster. bit of a fiddle, but can be done.

This is how I was taught to adjust drum brakes, seems to work OK.

Cheers Mick :smt023 thought it might be something like that, but didn't know if I would be able to back them off as the adjusters are new. I'll give it ago tomorrow.
 KD, telling granny how to suck eggs is no bad thing as I usually miss the simple things.
