How much would you pay for a cj paint?
« on: June 17, 2014, 05:05:41 PM »

I'm just interested to see how much people would pay to have their cj7 sanded and painted as the prices I am seeing are just crazy.

I have a second hand tub that's been repaired in usual places but in most part original and solid. The big unfortunate is its a 79 tub and I have an 81 so for ease I was going to swap the bulkhead from my old tub straight into this one so everything lines up. Tailgate, wings and bonnet all off the jeep ready to sand.

It's all off chassis and on a moving cart and been quoted 2750 to do the above then spray afterward and amazed so high for something without a roof!

Am I just price blind and getting a good deal or should I continue to search for someone who will come to price it as most won't touch if not driven to them

All advice helps as massive set back if can't get it swapped and might have to venture to a yj tub

This advice is based on the DIY .....ethos.

Media blasting or soda blasting can be cheap.....if indeed you need it.

Spraying. I always spray cellulose as its cheap doesn't kill you and you can do it in your garage with a compressor and a gun.
Paint is £12.50 a litre if you look on e bay
Grey filler primer is less but you'll need a 5 litre tin
Cellulose thinners also about £20 for 5 litres
So less than £100 in materials.
If your careful you can wet sand ......wet and dry with soap on paper to get rid of dust and over spray and just keep on ploughing it on till your happy then Tcut or similar to amazing shine.....

Job done...... :icon_biggrin: :icon_super:

As wildwood says, celly is the way to go, i painted my cj in the garden :003: as long as you put plenty on you can colour flat it and then polish your heart out, the more you polish the better it gets, and if you smash or scratch it you can blow it in yourself.

Cheers guys and I feel you may have a bit more talent at spraying than me!

Following on from earlier I've had another price at 1500 plus paint so getting closer

Gonna have to go a long way yet to beat £100 for paint, thinners etc plus £50 for consumables (wet&dry, masking tape, rubbing compound) + £150 for new compressor + £25 for spray gun, hose and some other stuff in the MM starter kit.
Even if you call it £500 just think what else you can buy for a grand, and the satisfaction too!

Tis the way I'm doing mine..... but maybe thats just because I'm a skinflint!
But believe me I have no talent whatsoever, just the patience to rub the runs and orange peel out!

lost the track a bit here, are you being quoted for just the respray or does it include welding in the later bulkhead and some body repairs?

That spray job looks spot on and my problem is I am the 'demolition' type rather than the painting at the end of a job type. My other half is driven mad as this lack of ability extends to decoration as well hence why I don't do that either

Without getting the guy in bother he has agreed to do the job himself rather than through his boss and will only need the spray booth at the end which will be in his bosses holiday so will do the lot for 1500 which as I think about it includes for lots of man hours welding and cleaning as well so prob not a bad price.

Wish I'd never bought a 79 body but hindsight is wonderful

Had a chat with the boys at Bobs Classic & Custom, bearing in mind this is without him seeing the car and only on my description, and your may well be in better condition than mine was, which is what he based it on.

For a show ready job about £5K, for a daily driver £2.5K, for cash in hand with no rush (fit in when can) about £2K.

The main diff is in the prep and paint costs, for a show car you can easy spend 1K on materials and loads of hrs in pre.

Struth, repairs as required, a bulkhead swap and a respray in a booth (ie no bugs, mowings or dog hairs), all for a grand and a half, I'd take his arm off!
You can even do other stuff while he's busy to be ready for reassembly.

Go for it.

I tell you what though...... :hysterical:
After spraying with a Mau Mart small compressor that is out of breath halfway through a door....
My old.....new to me  monster compressor that does the windy gun trick to 350 foot lb of torque thingies....is demon for spraying ......you could spray a lady and never get it out of breath.......

prob best add that that price also assumes that screen frame, hood, tailgate, wings and doors also need painting, if just the tub would be less

Paid £1k for mine, but all welding was done first

Was fitted in between other jobs at a Ford dealership bodyshop, job looks ok, certainly better than any attempt I could make in my dusty garage.

Yeah I think you are right it can be done myself but as I am piss poor on aesthetic and spending a fortune getting it back on road anyway ill get it professionally done.

I appreciate that all prep and other stuff costs money but there is no way on earth I'd pay 5k for a spray and I had a blazer sprayed for 2 k to showroom standard which is why thought odd about a third again on a cj with no roof

Going for it and have to wait til August for his bosses holiday for it all back but will do brake and fuel lines then will post pics so you can all see whether made correct decision

Whether my 360 is in it by then time will tell....
