WK Speed related whine
« on: June 18, 2014, 09:16:44 PM »

I've got a whine that sounds like it's coming from the front drivers side that is related to road speed.

I thought maybe wheel bearing but just jacked that side up and there's no play at all. My other thought was the CV joints in the driveshaft but on other cars with CV joints the sound of worn joints is worst when turning and that's not the case on the Jeep.

I know there's not many WK owners here I know but there is a lot of mechanical knowledge and I'd appreciate any help on diagnosing possible worn CVs or other reasons for the whine - it's getting properly noisy and I'm short on tinkering time set the moment.

Front prop has been replaced about a year ago because one of the cv joints was bad. I'm not sure it can be driven with no front prop either but not 100% certain. Not saying it's not the problem, I'll give it a wiggle to see if there's obvious play.

Peter you were 100% correct  -front prop rear CV joint is FUBAR, same reason that I replaced the prop 12-18 months ago. Didn't need to take it off and drive to diagnose, it wobbles and rattles around like a bastard. New CV joint ordered from driveshaftparts.co.uk for £60.

It seems that it is most likely that the front axle bushes will be shot and the flex causes the CV joint to go - at least that's what the Ausjeepoffroad forum consensus is. I'm going to order a set of these and then tackle what looks like a pig of a job to replace them. I might just take it all apart and the diff out rather than trying to work under the jeep with no room.

James, any update on this please. I too have a loud whine appears to be front offside on my WK/WH.      unlikely to be able to do it myself I would like to know how hard/easy a job.
How easy to diagnose prop cv or wheel earring without dropping the prop.
Thanks

Yes but also beware, I haven't solved the whine yet and have replaced the offside cv halfshaft this weekend with no luck. It's going into my local Jeep specialist this week to get looked over and I'll report back.
