mmm how much will this cost? lol
« on: February 20, 2015, 12:17:17 AM »

Well Jeep in for check up. Despite passing test 5 days ago .. 1 day before I bought it, Universal Joint is shot, alternator not working, water leak somewhere poss radiator ... How many of these should have been spotted by MOT tester? How much will this cost in parts lol and do any of you have the bits lying around haha?

Anything else worth doing whilst these are being done? Cosmetically or mechanically?

That's before I buy a lift kit and wheel and tyre change!! Grrr .. Thanks Nicola :-)

I would have thought if the light was showing on the dash with the alternator it should have been picked up by the MOT, but if no light they wouldn't check it. In terms of parts cost, they don't look too bad (just did a quick google/ebay). Alternator is around £150 but you can get it cheaper from places that specialise, like

http://www.alternatorsnstarters.co.uk/Pages/prices.aspx

UJ looks to be about £50
If you need a new Radiator around £100 should do it. It would be worth putting a post in the parts wanted section as people on here may have some spares kicking around

I dont have experience with your model, so hopefully some XJ owners can confirm/correct!

Thanks for the quick reply. Just very unsure about the MOT. Decided to call VOSA and complain about the station they said UJ should have been a failure. Not too bad parts wise at least :-)

Don't give lenient MOT testers a hard time, us jeep owners need them..

Unfortunately the UJ is about the only thing the MOT will be concerned with. None of the jobs or parts are too bad but it will probably add up a bit with labour charges.

Be careful complaining to VOSA. If you appeal a test they could retest your Jeep to within an inch of it's life and give you the mother of all fail lists to sort out. :003:

UJ as said is the only failure point for the MOT.

had the same issue with mine in regards to testers opinion, if you want to complain to VOSA make sure your vehicle is in A1 condition for all points tested or it could be a double edged sword for both of you.
VOSA are mechanical computer geeks who love to pull a vehicle off the road for the slightest thing if they can do it.

As long as the vehicle is mechanically sound then it will be good for a lift. New UJs wont be a bad thing as a lift could make old ones worse due to the change in angle and loading

Thanks guys .. Just get annoyed if people don't do their job. Don't mind paying and want the cars we have 'right' .. But you put your trust in professionals and when they let you down its annoying!! Grr

unless something has changed a worn uj on an axle was not a fail  just an advise not so car cv joints be sure you and they are talking about the same thing
alternator is not part of test if starts and rives in and out of the test thats fins as long as everything functions
and the rad is nothing to do with anything test wise

an mot is a minimum test to make sure its safe not a maximum inspection and health check that is up to you and whoever does ya fixing

Yeah ditto that, you really don't want VOSA themselves looking at your motor!
