Dog approved XJ
« on: February 22, 2015, 01:26:23 PM »

I've finally given up with TJs and bought an XJ. I'm not a 100% sure of the interior colour but my Dally "Dex" seems to approve.  :icon_biggrin: It came from a dealer 4 miles from home, went on Autotrader Friday afternoon, purchased by me early Saturday morning - to good an opportunity to miss. I'm giving up with TJs as I need something more suitable for Dex, he had major surgery for a slipped disc in his neck back end of last year (touch and go). Although fully recovered he needs to be discouraged from jumping to much/high and so TJ had to go. The plan is to: 1) replace front D30 with a HP D30 fitted with WJ knuckles/4.56/Truetrac, 2) replace rear D35 with a D44 with one fitted with 4.56/Truetrac, 3) 33x10.50, 4) 3" lift, 5) decent bumpers and skid plates. To get 33s to fit will be adjusting body work & bumpstops. The axles and tyres coming from a TJ I was building, a TJ that has been sold onto a friend who was looking for chassis/engine/body work etc.  Having never had a Cherry before, I'm hoping to buy all or as much possible in the UK. Looking at Jeepey they sell two 3" full leaf spring lift kits, Rough Country and Trailmaster.  Any recommendations or alternatives much appreciated?? XJ is going to be used for "softish" offroading.

Modifications
33x10.50
3" lift

decent bumpers

Contradicting statement above.

Not so, even with 33 + 3" lift side door will be lower than back of TJ, especially when rear seat is removed.

Plus the Cherry offers a lot more room at the back for a ramp. So I have options.

99.999% of the time Dex travels in a Kangoo.

Nice to see that you are concerned with Dex's health, however rest assured Dex gets the best possible care.

Ok, but where Dex is concerned I'm more than a little sensitive....

Sounds like a plan and you know how to fine tune it all once the parts are fitted so will be a very good XJ when it's done.

If you take the base of the back seat out and fold the back down it forms a nice flat carpeted 'boot / dog bed'. I think a 33x10.50 should fit in the stock spare wheel location if the tyre is deflated but my memory isn't grewt so worth a check.

Thanks James, spare tyre height was definitely something I'd not considered.

From memory with the dog guard in place I only got a 235 mud on the side mounted spare wheel point, well worth checking
