98 zj TD cuts out
« on: February 15, 2015, 06:46:14 PM »

Hi, just had a breakdown in the Jeep, was coming back from a family outing and the rev counter dropped momentarily then recovered, a few seconds later the Jeep cut out. I coasted to a stop and tried restarting, it fired up for a while then the rev counter died and the engine cut out, I left it for quite a while and it ran fine again for about 10 miles then did the same thing, anybody have a clue where to start looking for a fault? Thanks, Ian

I found out that the crank sensor on my 98 ZJ is the same as the XJ (56027963) so bought one, stripping the old one out. It was an absolute git of a job, I ended up dropping the gearbox down just to get to it, then replaced it, seems to have worked. I did notice that the middle wire on my old sensor wasn't attached properly so I'm hoping that was the fault. Not convinced though as there are only 2 wires at the plug end.
