Correct/Best ATF fot AW4 auto box in 1994 XJ
« on: June 14, 2015, 01:41:50 AM »

Hi All,

some of you may have noticed from my modified "New Jeep Owner in Waiting" thread that i have now bagged myself a '94 XJ Cherokee 4.0 auto.

Driving home (from Portsmouth to Lakenheath) the box performed as it should but it recently had some work done on the gearbox and/or transfer box and the ATF was topped up with 2L of unspecified fluid.
Being the fussy git that i am, i like to change all fluids fairly soon after getting a new car but so far haven't found anything that tells me the correct or best ATF to use.
Currently i use this stuff in my other cars :

Any good for my Jeep or should i go for Dexron II instead?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks - i thought it might be Dexron of some description. I'll also check on the tubs of the Carlube ATF-U that i have to see if it's Mercon ATF+4 compatible as a bit of digging i did last night brought up Mercon ATF+4 as a recommended fluid. Would make my life cheaper and easier if so as i use it in my Rovers as well.
It's slightly different to Dex III so may or may not be - i'll report back whichever way and if i use it for a part change will report on that too.

ATF+4 is not recommended for the AW4 transmission.

Thanks Mike - that saves me exhuming one of my Carlube ATF-U tubs from the shed to see if it is similar to ATF+4 - Dex III it will be!!!

On a similar subject, i've come across a few references to NOT using Dex II in the PAS on these - can you shed any light on an alternative to the Chrysler/Jeep/Mopar fluid please?

Thanks James.

That's a very definite bit of advice! Any particular reason for being so definite? Also i've seen somewhere on here about a "Thank you" button to thank people who have given good/helpful advice but can't seem to find it? Any clues where it is please?

It is a clear fluid and others will froth / foam and degrade seals used in the system. It's not particularly expensive so not worth messing around with trying to use stuff that is not the recommended fluid.

Seals used are slightly different in make up than seals used in other car steering systems

That's interesting to know! Sort of used to things like that as the auto box in my other cars uses a strange kind of adhesive to bond the friction linings to the clutch and brake bands so certain ATFs are a no-no for it. To be honest that was what precipitated the question in the first place.
